I just moved from Hawaii to DMV and the amount of Fed teleworking employees I'd see surfing everyday at 1000 was absurd. And before anyone says it, I knew they were feds because I worked in the same place as them.

Everyone knows there were tons of people abusing the system.

Maxi-flex is a thing, maybe they worked from 6-10 and 4-8. Still 8 hours but explains their midday activity. Either way, you don’t have facts. You just have opinions.

Don't defend them. No one should be surfing or playing pickleball at 1000 if they're a fed employee on telework.

Feds doing things like playing pickleball or surfing during the workday is why telework got taken away. I'm a career fed and I was more than a little annoyed at what my coworkers would tell me they do during the workday.

Honestly, how is this any different than using the office gym or taking a walk at lunch? Do you not realize Hawaii staff often work different hours to align better with EDT deadlines?

This 100%. By the time Hawaiians are eating lunch, EST is clocking out. I worked with someone in Hawaii once, and on days when we had meetings EST, he worked 4am to noon.

I worked in Hawaii. Of course I know how the time aligns.

The fact is everyone signed a document that they would be available during core hours. They weren't because they were surfing. So defend it all you want but personally when you sign a form saying you'll be available because you are teleworking and you aren't then you aren't abiding by the agreement. Behavior like this is why it got taken away.

My DH often works 12-hour days, including calls and meetings outside the US. To balance this, he can take an hour or two mid-day on days when he has 9PM or 6AM calls/meetings.

Another family member takes mid-day breaks using leave because they have so much of it that they can’t take in solid days or weeks due to the nature of their job.

You really cannot draw a conclusion based solely on seeing them during cure hours unless you are their supervisor and privy to all the details. If you suspect fraud/abuse, you should address it. But running around telling the public people are abusing telework without knowing for certain is reckless and irresponsible, and one of the reasons we’re all in this mess.

And what do you think that means? Do you know their exact work hours/restrictions/total time clocked on the day you saw them playing? IF you see a time card that says they were working when they were not working, then you can talk.

My office has a gym and encourages us to workout during lunch. I think you are blurring “workout stuff” with other recreation to make your point.

There are people in my office gym RIGHT NOW! Should I snitch?

Beyond that, yes, it should be easier to fire feds if they're bad at their jobs. This is not going to accomplish that.

You don't believe that a lot of feds are out there playing pickleball or surfing during their working hours?

It's a workforce with about 3 million people if you count the postal service. But, no, I don't think more than a tiny fraction of feds are doing this. And also, this is what you can actually fire people for already!

So they can’t surf of Friday if they completed 40 hours M-T and have F off because it is your work day? Are you ok with people golfing on a Monday like our President? Do you think the solution is dissolution of Maxi-flex and AWS to foreclose any perception of impropriety? If my coworkers are holding their weight and actually working their agreed upon hours per day, I don’t care what they do in their legitimate off time or break time. Telework was taken as another tool in the playbook of division and chaos but ok.

Don't defend bad behavior.

We all sign something saying we will be online during telework during core hours. Going and surfing or playing pickleball during those hours is violating that agreement. I've been a fed for almost 20 years and have NEVER seen an telework agreement that said you can work whatever hours you want whenever you want.

What if it was their lunch? We’ve been told we can take lunch during core hours and we can take 30 or 60 minutes.
