You don’t have to be a captain or leader of something at school. They do look for leadership traits but that could simply be expressed in so many ways other than a club or sport .

The graduation rate at WVU isn’t even good. No wonder they let smart kids in to boost the school. This is an odd comparison too. You just compared a #4 public university to one that didn’t even make the top 100.
You do know WVU is in a different state right? It’s not in Virginia.

Because 71% of accepted students DID submit their scores. You significantly reduce your chances with test optional. Also, you need to have the support of your public high school counselor who submits their own LOC, checks off the "most rigorous" or less box, and works to get the high school faculty to out together the LOCs. Our high school advisor was blunt that our DD didn't have a shot at UVA. She was right. All it took was one look at the Naviance records of prior Lengley kids who had gotten in to see that. So, we put together a reasonable list of reaches, targets, safeties and saved the UVA application fee.
Not sure 71% is right. According to SCHEV for 2024 admits, out of 3974, 1809 submitted SAT and 548 ACT. Thats 59%.
and some will submit both .. so less than 59% ... maybe close to 50? or 55?

Mo he stopped after 3 years of a foreign language; so a minus point one I assume now.
This will rile folks up but kids do get in without AP foreign language, one being our kid last year (engineering school).
Anecdotally kids do get in without it. No one's application is going to be perfect. But having AP world language can help soften another weakness the candidate might have. This is what they mean by "holistic."

I don't even understand what the point of this x number applied x number of years ago. Between kids applying to more colleges, public school being more affordable, and test optional, more applied to UVA. Is it a surprise?

From our school, yes. There are so many clubs, sports and other activities to lead though! Definitely a wide variety of interests

^^ Remember also that your child is being compared to other UVA applicants in the same high school class. Kids can be cruel (and yes they all talk about this stuff). My DD would have been humiliated by the competition

Yes but those applicants are usually hard core science types whose stats and resume reflect that. These same students are also excused from the University's own foreign language requirement. The AOs are very clear in wanting to see high school students exhaust the curriculum their high school offered (rigor) whuch includes WL. Same for most
of the T25.
Ah but it’s my kid so I can say that they aren’t a hard core science type. Yes, AP bio, AP physics. But not a bunch of science ECs.
Yep we all get it - the recommendations. But folks deserve to know that there are exceptions. Not sure why some always want to make that black or white. Oh well!
