I felt so sad after watching that. The facility has become an enabling crutch at this point. Hopping a plane and leaving your 3 year-old for weeks at a time can't be healthy. She needs a lot more support and for someone to fight for her. Tyler is overwhelmed and is a trauma survivor as well, he's not to blame. Just a crappy situation made into kind of a circus because of it being filmed.

But if they weren't filmed, weren't doing this show, they would NEVER have the resources to pay for any kind of treatment, they would never have the ability to fly Nova out there to see her, they would never have the perspective to realize this isn't all there is in life. All they know is illness, addiction, dysfunction. Being a part of the show gave them a broader world view than they would have ever had without it.

And has it gotten them out of the cycle they're in? My DD is Nova's age and I just couldn't imagine leaving her for that long. There is no substitute for your mom being present when you're 3. If she were in a coma it would be unavoidable but this... is avoidable. She has other options. At the very least come home after a few days or a week. Enlist family members to help you find resources closer to home. Move your family to the freakin' desert so you can still be a part of your little girl's life. The fact that she didn't entertain any other options, Tyler rightly identified is the real problem, not her mental illness.

To me - if the options are Catelynn leaves for 6 weeks and comes back happier and healthy - OR - Nova grows up with the same kind of mother Cate did (think of all the abuse caused by April as a result of her alcoholism, anxiety and depression issues) but is there every day of her childhood, I'd take that 6 weeks every time.

Because you automatically follow in your addict parent's footsteps unless you spend several months in a rehab facility out of state? Come on. The facility enables her to keep her coming back. She'll be back to square one every time some sucky life thing happens until she finds long-term local care and a support group, and learns how to cope with her emotions without the promise of escaping her daily life for 6 weeks at a time.

I love Butch and really love Tyler and Caitlyn. I just feel that their families are so dependent on them. With addict parents you have to grow up really fast and cope with things most children never have to. I would love to see them move away and flourish. Stay in touch with the family but put some healthy distance. And okay maybe bring Butch with them but leave that sister and the mothers far away from them. I’d love to see them take classes. I thought Tyler wanted to be a social worker and help other work through adoption issues that they went through. I just want them to do awesome. They seem like such sweet kids.

I mean, I don't disagree, but you have to think of the context. Compared to their friends and family that clothing line is 10 million times better than anyone they know will ever do. They will never leave their families because the codependency is so deep and quite literally they are all that keeps those people moving in the right direction and heads above water.

What's the deal with Ty's sister though - two episodes she was so strung out and half dead looking, now she's all clean and shiny and crying like she can't even fathom what addiction is like for Butch? Is it all an act? She couldn't have cleaned up her act without help in such a short time.

I have mixed feelings about this. In my state, when adopting a child in the care of the state, you are required to essentially foster the prospective adoptee child for a certain amount of time (I can't recall, but it's not a short period of time either). This is absolutely a "trial period." My family adopted a boy with a very traumatic history and very severe and ultimately permanent emotional problems. He was about 5 when he came to my family. He had already been passed through SEVERAL prospective adoptive families at that point, who had not made it through that "trial period" with him, because of his rough behaviors and emotional disregulation. He clearly had reactive attachment disorder, but that wasn't even a diagnosis then, and certainly not common knowledge. It was damaging for him to get passed from one family to another, obviously. But I think it would have been even more damaging for any of those families to have adopted him, not knowing what they were signing up for, and realizing too late that it was more than they could/would handle. This is a recipe for abuse, among other things.

Settle down Margaret! It was a legitimate question. This was just a meeting to gather information. Wouldn't you rather she get told "No, once you adopt, the deal is done" and for her to say "Okay then we can't commit" than for her to take a kid, have them be more than she can handle, and for her to give them back?

Harsh but a completely valid question on maci’s part. After all, it is all a trial period to see how things work out.
