It's seriously a town without pity. I remember when we moved here I asked if it might be possible to have a cat and two dogs in an apartment building with a two-pet rule and people were actually trying to figure out where we were trying to rent, so they could tell on us. (We rented a different property, although that wasn't why.)

I don't think these women care who you marry or what you prefer, but they damn well care a LOT if you park in front of their house, or wear contrasting plaid, or drive a dirty car, or jaywalk, walk to the store....

I'm from the NC and get that comment, too.

Out of curiosity, why is it offensive to say I love your accent? A lot of people around here have accents, it's not a secret or anything to be ashamed of actually. If someone told me I love your accent, I'd take it as a compliment and would never think I didn't fit in because of it.

Every single person has an accent. No one wants a dull "difference" like accent pointed out endlessly by the same kind of endless chump.
