But in general I used to think public teachers unions were polar opposites of public police unions. Now I think they are the same.

Your perception is so warped. Luckily you hold no power and your opinion means less than a dust mite.

Except that every Republican politician is repeating the same lie, because their party coordinates their lying every week.
But most white parents in DC are starting to figure out that this is all a lie.
You should have seen the intense anti-union white friend of mine (who of course gets all her news from WaPo and doesn’t realize that Thiessen and Ed Rogers are paid just to lie to people like her) when she heard that AFT was in favor of all schools opening in the fall.
It was like a Eureka moment - she realized that she’d been a victim of this anti-union rhetoric.

Anonymous wrote:It’s super racist that white people (who have been tricked by Betsy DeVos and other rightwing billionaires through rightwing media that leaks into the NYT and other outlets) want to destroy public schools and teacher unions. Not sure if the goal of enriching DeVos and billionaires is racist, because I don’t think most people who hate teachers unions realize how they’re being exploited.
And police unions are the other side of the coin of the *military* — which cannot unionize. The sole providers of state sponsored violence should be subject to full oversight by society, not made immune vía unions. Other workers should be allowed to organize.

The mayor being black, the principal being black, the chancellor being black doesn’t stop it from happening.
Learn something about how racism works.
Anonymous wrote:Coronavirus levels in August were so low in DC that coronavirus was practically nonexistent. Every major medical association said it was safe for schools to reopen. So daycares opened. Private schools opened. Public schools almost everywhere outside the DMV opened. Bowser wanted public schools to reopen too but teachers refused to do their job because WTU saw an opportunity to turn the pandemic into an extended paid vacation, everyone else be damned. No one is going to forget what WTU did to their families.

But it was still crass to see just how single-mindedly WTU fought any reasonable compromise to reopen. Tooth and nail, no matter how much families were suffering. That's just not a good look and it probably cost teachers quite a bit of goodwill for years to come.
This. Exactly this.
White families...many POC still want DL
They also never want to be vaccinated
With a long history of why.
Didn’t know there are good anti-vaxxers
There aren't. This excuse-making, including rebranding anti-scientific anti-vaxxers "vaccine hesitant" because they happen to be POC is ridiculous (and WTU engaged in a lot of it this year). Get vaccinated or not. But at this point, if you don't and you get sick, that's on you. Not on "structural racism" or "white supremacy." Take some responsibility for your life for crying out loud. And stop using your own irrationall fears to prevent this city's kids from getting back to school.
