NPD and a total sociopath.
That’s partly why it’s so fascinating that he was buddies with basically the entirety of the elite ruling class. Even after his conviction, rich celebrities like Katie Couric and Chelsea Handler and billionaires like Bill Gates were choosing to spend time with him. It suggests to me that they’re all sort of lacking in character and morals.
I think Katie Couric was drawn into his orbit when her career was at a low point and she had been dumped by NBC. Apparently Handler went to a dinner party at Epstein's house as COURIC'S INVITED GUEST when she was 20 and had no idea who he was.
This is a pretty wild story:

In short, Epstein used other famous names to whitewash his own name. Their reputation rubbed off on him. This NYTimes story goes into great detail as to how he pulled it off after his previous conviction:
Mr. Epstein’s social strategy proceeded from his legal one. The lenient agreement he reached with prosecutors — his plea involved one girl and the crime was prostitution, which made it look like the teenager was in part to blame — gave others a reason to dismiss his wrongdoing, decide he had already paid his penalty or not question what had happened.

In short, even among the most elite circles, people will go-along-to-get-along in a polite social setting. If your friend's cheating ex-husband is invited to a mutual friend's dinner party, do you put up a stink in front of everyone? Epstein - like a true sociopath - took advantage of social graces and polite society to reintegrate himself among the elite.
And, frankly, he was blackmailing a decent portion of them - Dershowitz, Leon Black, Prince Andrew, Les Wexler, to name a few - to reintroduce him back into society.
