Look maybe VT found that it’s charter was best served by taking kids who wouldn’t get in to UVA or W&M. If you are a VA resident you’ve got great choices. If they choose to do admissions differently and don’t want to be used as a safety school that’s their right and no one is harmed by having to go to UVA or W&M. I’m sure a super high star kid with demonstrated interest and good essays is getting in.

If a smart student can’t realistically identify a college that will accept them and their family can afford, they may lack common sense. Perhaps, parents need to be more involved in the application selection and strategy process.
Really? I doubt you have better common sense. So there is no point for having the concept of safety, match and reach schools?
There is, but when your reach is MIT, your match is Cornell, and your safety is VA Tech, there may be a problem, particularly if money is an issue (the previous poster mentioned value). If money is an issue, why not ED to UVA or VATech and target other state schools like Purdue or Illinois (for engineering).
My point is that high-stats kids tend to pick a reach and match that are similarly difficult to achieve. So, the only high probability acceptance is the safety. But, if they apply to the safety last (EA at Tech is essentially RD) there may be no spots left. At that point, stats don’t matter.

I would be embarrassed if I got in with low stats but I was black or brown. Don’t URMs want to play on the same playing field? Aren’t they embarrassed they have lower requirements?
