Improvements this week to both phone and web, as well as 15% more vaccine expected.

People DO want the shots, numbnuts. I have been trying for weeks to get an appointment for my friend in Ward 5. None available.

You need the magic Internet powers only available in Ward 3.

You do realize there actually are fewer people with internet access in certain wards, right? No one is suggesting that NO ONE in Wards 7 or 8 has internet access, just that it's less common than in other wards (presumably due to income levels because internet access costs money).

Read the post a few back. Connectivity in DC is very high, even among poor people. This is not the reason.

DC isn't rural, so sure, most places can access internet service (which is what the previous poster posted), but that's different from who actually pays for service. About 25% of DC residents don't have broadband access, but those numbers are more like 65% in Wards 5, 7, and 8 (numbers from the DC government). I think we can fairly assume that numbers are lower than that for the elderly who are less likely to use the internet overall. That places probably half the people you're trying to reach at a significant disadvantage, and you can't hand wave that away by saying "connectivity in DC is very high."

This is actually a fake statistic that even DC has revised.

99% of Washingtonians have broadband access of 100mbps or faster. In fact there are only approximately 3000 people in the city who do not have access to some sort of internet. Certainly not enough to create a digital divide.

Of those 3000 people in the city, I am not sure the breakout into the number in Ward 8 and the number of those who are 65 or over.

But I do believe like another poster suggested that we need to stop assuming that Ward 8 grammas are somehow computer illiterate.

“Having broadband access” is not the same as having working internet and a working computer in your home. Sure, there’s a Comcast hook up in your alley, but that doesn’t mean you have it in your home.

Seriously dude, find me one person in the city who wants wireless access but cannot get it. There are a dozen organization in the city tripping over themselves to provide internet access, computers, tablets etc. The number of orgs goes down constantly because there simply is not enough of a market for them. There are not enough people without to give to to justify seeking the donations ets.

Heck even DCPS gave out free computers and hotspots. (only mention because there is a poster who loves equating everything to DCPS)

OMG, have you ever met an old person? I am currently trying to find vax appointments for my 83 year old mother in Ward 3, my stepmom and dad in Montgomery county, and my former babysitter in Ward 5. All over 70. Not one of them would be able to navigate the website fast enough to get an appointment, or call for hours. It doesn't matter if they have broadband access or not (babysitter has a cell phone only). They don't have the patience and/or savvy to get appointments without help. Hell, I have patience AND savvy and haven't had any luck helping them.

Not concerned about your Ward 3, 83yo mother. She will figure it out.

My point is that not all elderly can access the internet. Just because someone has access to the internet does not mean they are able to access it.

What?

And this is why we have such ineffective policies in this city.

Find me somebody who needs a computer or a tablet to access the internet. I'll point them to a non profit that will help them out.

Stop being obtuse. There are plenty of old people who can't even use a cell phone, much less a computer. That's what it means to not be able to "access" the internet. It's not about devices or broadband.

DC HAS A PHONE SIGN UP. If that doesn't solve the 'access' problem, they could A) improve both the crashing of the web and telephone sign-ups (that would demonstrate their will to make Covid shots accessible to residents) and B) set up roving sign up vans or kioks at the grocery store or on the corner. I volunteer Charles, Elissa and Trayon for 1st shift.

Not everyone who has a computer/tablet or access to one or access to the internet using such a device knows how to use one such that they can figure out how to sign up for vaccine. Particularly older people, regardless of race.

DC HAS A PHONE LINE!

There are people who can find disparity everywhere. DCHealth set up a system of increased access in the most impacted Wards (more inoculation sites) and we invented some sort of Ward 8 people are not "savvy" enough excuse. It is amazing really.

The phone number only works for non persons of color apparently. Something to do with not having the patience to wait on hold.

Our ANC is flooded with complaints about trying to get appointments over the phone. You all are disgusting.

The vaccine is made available to certain Wards FIRST - that means if the city gets allocated X amount - the first group is the selected zip codes (for Bowser votes) and then a smaller allotment to the horrible, terrible, Ward 4 people.

Not concerned about your Ward 3, 83yo mother. She will figure it out.

Instead, have the eligible people register online or by phone and then DC can contact them according to an algorithmically-sorted order that includes all wards day by day.

If you dont confirm your spot it goes to a waiting list, and have a certain number of people on "standby" everyday. They are guaranteed first the next day. And make the sites convenient, by foot if possible, to everyone in our "green city". To those who cant walk, provide the DC Medicaid and MetroAccess Vans. We are.a TINY city. This isnt hard Mayor Bowser (who got hers yesterday along with 50 DC govt. Officials )
