In fact, I might start telling people my dog has the same name as their kid (I don’t have a dog) to gauge their reaction.

We are part of a bigger friend group, so it's not like my kid will see this dog a lot. But it's still really irritating to me. I'd rather have a friend name their kid the same name, but a dog feels insulting.
I actually sort of hate it when people use common names for their animals in general. Lets keep it to Sparky and Snowflake.
I wouldn’t like you I think. My dogs have been Keith, John, and Craig.
I named my kid first!!! If the dog had been named first, fine. If you knew a toddler named Craig at the time you got your dog, would you still have used it? That's my main beef. She knew it was my kid's named and still used it for her dog. We may get a gerbil and I think I'll name it after her. No big deal right?!
I actually sort of want to meet a dog named Barbara.

This is a very minor thing, but I have been wondering if I offended an acquaintance in a recent conversation. She shared the name of her youngest child to me and I casually mentioned that I love that name and that it is also our dogs name.
It felt like the tone of the conversation immediately changed and that I may have offended her? It is rude to tell someone that their child and your dog share a name? Ordinarily, I would never think twice about this because it seems like no big deal... but her response made me think of twice. She is the mom of my DDs classmate. I know this is nothing to apologize for, but I’m curious what others think about this?
Some people get offended. We had a dog named Maggie, met a couple with a DD named Maggie, and we changed the dog's name. From that point on I have never considered a name for a pet that is likely to be the name of one of my child's classmates.
You changed your dogs name?? Now that's extreme.

But, I know and love her, and I realize that she is did not mean anything by it. Hopefully, even if your friend was taken aback in the moment, she will realize you meant no harm.
Lemme guess Dexter?
That's my dog's name!!!

I have a Maggie and same!
