Yes, you are right. Part of what bothers me so much about Prince's death is the sadness of it (alone, on pills, in an elevator, not found for hours), and that it was too soon. We understand when death comes for RGB or Sean Connery - we are sad but it's part of the natural course of things. It hurts so much more when they are too young.

NP. But I agree with PP. Celebrity deaths affect me not at all. I have plenty of empathy and sympathy for people in my life. I just don’t put celebrities on a pedestal.

I don't put them on a pedestal either, but find death by suicide incredibly sad whether I know the victim or not.

While I was impacted by a few (already listed earlier) I do find the facebook posts from people mourning pretty much every celeb who dies as a little much. When you post Noooooo.....not another one, when it's someone who was 90 years old and lived a full life, it doesn't seem very genuine.

Chadwick Boseman - in part because I didn't know he was sick and didn't expect it. In part, because Black Panther was such a lovely movie and a special experience.

There were a few in the last few years that were in close succession that broke my heart: Alan Rickman, Anthony Bourdain, Philip Seymour Hoffman

I had been skiing since I was five and back then no one wore helmets. I also didn't ski much in my late 20s/early 30s when helmets became popular. I was just starting to ski again regularly when she died. It is hard to remember now but it used to be that no regular skiers wore helmets and people worried they would make it harder to hear skiers behind you (I have not found that to be the case).

It's just you and me, I guess. I'm astounded by the responses here. My reaction to most of these deaths (those who I've heard of anyway) has typically been, "aw, that's too bad." I'm particularly surprised by the impact on so many people of the deaths of people who were the victims of their own self-destructive behavior.

Princess Di and JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette. I was a teenager and can still remember where I was/what I was doing when I heard about their crashes.

I think it had to do with the degree of tragedy of their respective accidents and how there were those hours of waiting and waiting and hoping, then getting confirmation of death.

A radio station in DC would play that weepy Sara McLaughlin song mixed in with JFK Jr speaking (and his dad too?) in the days after his death and I would bawl and bawl while driving.
