Allowing people to run away from police is even worse. It is basically telling criminals, to just take off. They have better chances if they run away.

Now the guy is taking off, he most likely has a reason he is ditching the cops. maybe an illegal gun or firearm in the car. Or he has a warrant out for his arrest. Or car is stolen.

I don't know about you but I have never taken off if I had police pulling me over. Maybe I am old fashioned, I don't know.

An environment where the police engage in a car chase when a driver runs a red light, is not a safe environment.

I would prefer to live in a safe environment, where the police follow the police procedures about car chases.

So essentially you are saying let people do what they wish. If someone takes off, the police should go for donuts instead of doing something about it. Lovely. No wonder DC is so messed up. Not looking forward to seeing what happens if this stupid Initiative 81 passes.

I’m white and got ticketed for jay walking in Adams Morgan. It’s pretty dangerous to ride a fast machine on a sidewalk. With Philadelphia ransacked, MPD probably correctly felt the need to not allow total chaos to break loose in DC.

Just FYI. He was looking for his keys which he had lost earlier. That's why he was on the sidewalk and he was probably driving very slowly so that he could see the keys.

Source?

An interview with his friend who was the one who rented the scooter. His friend was very upset that he let him use the scooter rather than walking to look for the keys.

Great. So his friend is just as responsible for his death as potentially the police are.

Who let him give that interview? What an idiot.

Also: who the hell looks for their keys on the sidewalk by driving a moped? That story makes zero sense, yet it's being taken credulously. Also, there's no way to drive a moped "very slowly" and remain upright. Again, this story is nonsensical.

There were completely reasonable actions the cops could have taken instead of giving chase.

Yes this exactly. Plus they violated MPD policy. They stated themselves the reason for pursuit was that he wasn’t wearing a helmet. That is not reason enough to pursue him.

Why does that sound like a nice world to live in to you? Sounds kind of shitty to me, so instead I'll vote for leaders who will work against that. No one should die just because they are running from the police. Have fun in your fascist hellhole, Greg.

No one should run from the police! Mess up? Deal with the consequences like an adult. We live in a society of rules and laws. This isn’t Thunderdome

Ok, let's assume I agree that no one should run from the police (there's the faulty assumption that the police are 100% correct and honest, which is faulty).

So then what should be the consequences if someone chooses to run? An additional misdemeanor charge if caught? Summary execution? Something in between?

Sometimes pedestrians are summarily executed by people running from police or just already engaged in illegal behavior and driving irresponsibly. This has happened to folks in DC hit by stolen vehicles. This could have happened to anyone on foot hit by this kids scooter. This is primarily why police dont give chase.

NP but this is insanity. You're arguing for police chases when someone runs a light? That has to be sarcasm; what you're envisioning is drastically less safe than reality (where a ticket is mailed to that person's house).

Last night was the second night of protests regarding MPD's handling of the scooter incident and the subsequent death of a Brightwood resident.

Medics report several infants and several 14-18 year olds were pepper sprayed with tear gas, response escalated by poilice at 8:45 PM.

Thoughts?

Here are some thoughts:

If you

- ride a moped on a sidewalk, without a helmet, and
- illegally flee a legal police stop, and
- wreck while evading police, then...

The outcome is 100% on you. There is nothing for reasonable, rational people to protest.

More

- If you bring an infant to a riot, you are negligent
- 14-18 year olds in Brightwood are hardly babies: that's the cohort committing much of the smash-and-grabs and muggings.
- People smashing squad car and HQ windows belong in jail
- Anyone launching powerful fireworks at police officers should do serious jail time

Agreed!!!

I'll wait for the US Attorney and MPD internal affairs to review before making a judgement. I've heard too many different stories and trust the powers that be to sort it out.

Teens in the burbs run from cops every weekend when their parties are busted. The consequence is not death.

It is if they run into the path of a moving car!
