Subject: Brightwood Protest: MPD has lost control. They all need to be replaced.
Allowing people to run away from police is even worse. It is basically telling criminals, to just take off. They have better chances if they run away.
Now the guy is taking off, he most likely has a reason he is ditching the cops. maybe an illegal gun or firearm in the car. Or he has a warrant out for his arrest. Or car is stolen.
I don't know about you but I have never taken off if I had police pulling me over. Maybe I am old fashioned, I don't know.

So essentially you are saying let people do what they wish. If someone takes off, the police should go for donuts instead of doing something about it. Lovely. No wonder DC is so messed up. Not looking forward to seeing what happens if this stupid Initiative 81 passes.

Just FYI. He was looking for his keys which he had lost earlier. That's why he was on the sidewalk and he was probably driving very slowly so that he could see the keys.

An interview with his friend who was the one who rented the scooter. His friend was very upset that he let him use the scooter rather than walking to look for the keys.
Great. So his friend is just as responsible for his death as potentially the police are.

Also: who the hell looks for their keys on the sidewalk by driving a moped? That story makes zero sense, yet it's being taken credulously. Also, there's no way to drive a moped "very slowly" and remain upright. Again, this story is nonsensical.

Yes this exactly. Plus they violated MPD policy. They stated themselves the reason for pursuit was that he wasn’t wearing a helmet. That is not reason enough to pursue him.

So then what should be the consequences if someone chooses to run? An additional misdemeanor charge if caught? Summary execution? Something in between?
Sometimes pedestrians are summarily executed by people running from police or just already engaged in illegal behavior and driving irresponsibly. This has happened to folks in DC hit by stolen vehicles. This could have happened to anyone on foot hit by this kids scooter. This is primarily why police dont give chase.

NP but this is insanity. You're arguing for police chases when someone runs a light? That has to be sarcasm; what you're envisioning is drastically less safe than reality (where a ticket is mailed to that person's house).

- 14-18 year olds in Brightwood are hardly babies: that's the cohort committing much of the smash-and-grabs and muggings.
- People smashing squad car and HQ windows belong in jail
- Anyone launching powerful fireworks at police officers should do serious jail time

Apparently the cops knew him well from previous problems he’s had with the law. Therefore, (and this is before all the facts come out, so I’m assuming he wasn’t armed or acting in a violent or threatening manner) there was absolutely no reason for them to give chase. Document his infraction and mail him a ticket or get a warrant for his arrest, whatever his violation legally called for. There were completely reasonable actions the cops could have taken instead of giving chase.
