I would giver her some manner of braids. I don't like tight braids as it leads to alopecia but I'd figure out a style that wouldn't be painful and would be good enough to match. It wouldn't occur to me to feel weird about this.

I won't use Mambo or hot sauce. That is exclusively for Black people. I refuse to eat any Mexican food either because I might like it and don't want to encourage the wrong people into making it. I just stick with European roots of boiled cabbage and potatoes like all rational white people should.

I am not OP, but I am also an immigrant trying to understand. Would it be ok to say to a black kid not to do something because it is a “white thing”. I understand the debate for older kids or adults. But don’t we want to foster real empathy and friendship between kids of different backgrounds?

Black parents have to tell their kids that all the time. Main one, "don't talk back to the police." And yeah, the conversations have to start early for their safety. The 6-year-old baby made to lie down next to her family on the hot ground in the August Colorado sun with guns drawn on them doesn't get to do "white things," so I don't know why everyone is freaking out at the suggestion that she wear a different type of braid other than beaded cornrows.

I don’t get the “cultural appropriation” nonsense. Seems admiring and emulating things people like about other cultural practices would be appreciated, viewed as a positive thing. I’m Irish - you all who are not are still welcome to dress in green on St. Patrick’s Day. This is how cultures interact and ultimately fuse; removes divisiveness, is a good thing.

She's 5. As long as you don't get it done too, I think you're okay. You're going to get stares if you go out, someone might feel the need bc they are a jerk and uncomfortable themselves, but just move on.

1. Talk to the other mom, don't surprise her. she might refer you to someone who can do the braids. An experienced hair braider can do the braids pretty quickly. I wouldn't try to go too thin on the braids.
2. Explain that there might be some pain, and that with her hair type they will not last as long as her BFF's. That has more to do with hair type than race (although race is a factor in hair type). My dd has this issue with her hair type and she's AA (her dad is first gen from one of the colonizing-seasoning countries used during the slave trade in Africa - he has straight/wavy hair). She still does all kinds of braids and locs, but eventually long strands of hair make their way out of the braids.
3. Go about your business. People, including me if I saw you and your daughter might stop and stare, but I'll get over it because we're talking about a 5 year old here.

Talk to the other mom first. Go from there.
