Thank you. I’m OP. One of the reasons we prefer paper books is my son gets headaches when reading on screens. We are also trying to keep expenses down, so I don’t wish to spend money on a kindle right now.

I get this. But, I don't get why you think library workers should have to put themselves in harm's way so you can have exactly the kind of reading experience you want right now.

what is ridiculous is that you have not bought a kindle (or a nook, or the indie version) already and checked out books from the library that way. yes, high demand, but the waitlist / hold system works well in our experience. and you can get kindle unlimited which has lots of kids books.

We prefer paper books in our household. I don’t believe in reading on screens.

Do you also not believe in people getting sick? You sound obnoxious, to be honest.

NP here! The brain does not absorb material written in electronic books as easily as physical books. They’re an acceptable option for adults and older children. Not babies, toddlers/pre schoolers or elementary children.

There have been several studies on this. Here’s one: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/aug/19/readers-absorb-less-kindles-paper-study-plot-ereader-digitisation

Similarly, taking notes by hand boosts retention vs. typing them

Oh ffs, deal with the situation we're in. My 6 year old has read nearly 100 magic treehouse ereader books since quarantine started and i guarantee he retained a ton (in fact he won't shut up about the facts he's learned). when library reopens in some fashion we'll gladly go back to paper, but you're being silly depriving your child of unlimited reading opps in the meantime. even if a kid retains LESS on an ereader, he's still going to retain more / derive more enjoyment from reading SOMETHING more than than he will from reading nothing. talk about making the perfect the enemy of the good.

** pp here - magic treehouse TYPE books (those and similar early readers)

I lost my job and I'm struggling to pay my mortgage. I don't know when I can go back to work, as I'm a single mom and I have to take care of my two kids. Please don't call me cheap. Not everyone can afford to buy books.

I am so sorry. I wish I knew how to contact you so that I could buy your kids an e reader and they could get free library books. this sucks.

For myself I have no time now

You didn’t mention this, but people my neighborhood have been offering books on the listserv almost every day. A lot of people seem to be cleaning out bedrooms and basements. I know I’m planing to purge our first reader books soon.

I’m not a cheapskate, but I don’t like to waste money on something I’m not sure if I’m my kid will like. I buy plenty of books, but only after DCs check them out of the library and love them and I decide it’s worth it to keep at home for the long haul.

+1000. When it's not in the library, I go so far as to use interlibrary loan to check out books I'm not sure about (ex: if I can't find reviews from sources I trust or ask friends about them).

i know of one that drops the bag in your trunk. Another brings the bag and puts it on a table then walks away. Once they are away, you can get out of your car and pick up the bag. Neither are accepting returns at this time.Another has sets of 5 books pulled at random for ages or by subject, like a grab bag (I'm not sure how that one works for tracking what books you have)

Fairfax could certainly figure something out along these lines. It wouldn't be perfect, and it would be slower, and perhaps with how much criticism people in this area are quick to give out, the library is hesitant to even try. But i wish we could do something!

I totally agree. Fairfax is so lame.

Honestly, it just seems like Fairfax and other local library systems just can't be bothered. If they can get full pay for sitting home doing nothing, why try to go back to work? I bet their attitude would change if the county decided to lay off or furlough library staff in the coming months if we continue to be under stay at home orders. They'd figure out a system pretty quick.

I hate to sound so cynical. But the idea of them doing nothing while so many people in this area are unemployed and could use these materials for themselves or their kids just really offends me.

They posted on Facebook that they want to start curbside pick up of holds on June 1st “in anticipation” of the stay at home order being lifted on May 29th. Time will tell, I suppose. Don’t know why I can curbside pick up at Kohl’s but not the taxpayer funded library .......

Jesus lord, life is unfair. Get over it and gain some perspective.
