This purposeful ignorance and/or blatant lying drives me insane.

She’s right, though. For the vast majority of Americans, no one was freaking out about this until the night with the triple whammy of Trump Oval Office speech/ Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson diagnosed/ NBA players tested positive and they canceled the season.

There is a big difference between “freaking out” and getting on a cruise...

The fact that there were a ton of cruise ships debarking from the U.S, on March 7th and pretty much none of them had any Coronavirus outbreaks means that those passengers did a better job of assessing risk than the passengers who cancelled did. They missed out on a really beautiful trip. I feel bad for them.

Jesus.

Zero cruise ships departing from U.S. with zero outbreaks of Coronavirus happening = zero actual risk in hindsight. The risk was fear based.

Haha. Is that what you’re telling yourself?

Nothing is more profitable than a cruise ship. The cruise line should be responsible for repatriation and the cost of quarantine for every passenger on the ship. Regardless of cost. Very irresponsible to run the cruise in the first place.

Huh? Lots and lots of this DCUM community (and many many others) were canceling trips including spring breaks and starting preparations. We knew what was coming because we watched it happen in other countries.

You can actually get a whole degree called, Emerging Infectious Diseases because they are entirely natural and inevitable.

And all of this social distancing is not going to make Coronavirus (poof!) go away. It's just spreading out how many get infected at one time so that the healthcare systems are not overloaded.

Obviously people are still contracting the virus, even with all of these measures in place.

He could have said “don’t go on a cruise”, but he said “this will all be over soon”.

Lol. You are really reaching.

I went on a March 7th cruise to the western Caribbean and it was absolutely wonderful, everyone on the ship was having a fun time, I am so glad that we were able to go before the cruise ships were stopped. I can honestly say that I am glad I went on that cruise as opposed to going to NYC...which we had talked about doing.

How does it make you feel to read that everyone on this thread would have no sympathy if you were dying now because you did that.

This pandemic is bringing the lord of the flies types in our culture

They knowingly and deliberately put the rest of us at risk just to have some FUN. Absolutely no other reason except to have a bit of fun. So yeah, I have no sympathy.

But if I had gone to a real high risk area (NYC) you would have sympathy for me? Make some sense.

If you had gone to a crowded wedding in NYC that week, we would also say you are stupid.

Name a place in NYC that isn't crowded on a normal day. There are 8.6 million people in that city. Yet, travel was not BANNED that weekend and no one who did go to NYC that week thought for a second that they would be unable to get back home.

Bottom line is, a Coronavirus quarantine could have happened anywhere at anytime to anyone. You are just hyper focused on cruise ships. It could just as easily have been your office building or your kid's school.

?? You can leave NYC any time and come home. Even now. Or school. Or a building. Can you really not tell the difference between your office and a ship out in international waters?

ALL U.S. originating cruise ships made it back to port. All of them. Every single one.

While I agree that context helps, there are many people pushing the idea that only older patients and patients with health issues are getting seriously ill. Be careful not to confuse context with complacency.

While age and health issues definitely create higher risk for more serious infection and death, it is misleading to keep saying, as many posters here and as some news outlets do, that younger people and healthy people don't die from this virus. Are the risks lower? Yes. We should note that. But I'm still seeng so many "you're fine if you're young and healthy, it'll be like a cold" posts in different DCUM forums that it seems there's quite a myth out there that this isn't a big deal for everyone.

And, the ageism that has been rampant in this coverage is appalling. I guess "right to life" stops at the vagina. Seriously people. our parents and grandparents are not rotten food to be discarded.

One of the characteristics of low-average intelligence is less critical thinking. People tend to think more concretely and are more likely to hear something and believe it to be true - versus analyzing, dissecting and using higher order thinking.

They don't necessarily do research or look for scientific evidence or seek out multiple perspectives to better understand the decision they are making. They are less likely to question information someone who puts themselves forward as an expert or an authority figure gives.

Half the population is like this - if not more. That is why wrong information is so scary - many people will just take it as truth.

Which is why ignorant, money/ego-driven leaders at the bully pulpit are so dangerous. As are the networks that amplify their misinformation.
