My mom never called me ugly per se but she definitely gave me a complex. Too skinny, not enough curves, frizzy hair, fat ankles, mediocre nose - I think she saw a lot of the traits she didn't like in herself in me and took it out on me.

And the notes and comments casting people (many of which were young for these jobs) made were SO NASTY. Some had fields for look and "body shape" that they would just write the worst stuff in.
The drama people in my school were the popular ones, so it depends on the context.
