Apparently, doctors are now ordering it for their friends and families and asking for it in larger quantities than anyone would need to fight Covid, which is something like 12 pills tops. The pharmacist ranted about this for about a half an hour this morning, and told me good luck getting it.
It's the new hand sanitizer.
No, it's not. There is a ton coming. It's not the pharmacist's job to pick and choose who gets to live and who gets to die. The pharmacist should call the prescribing doctor if they have an issue. Report them if they think it's being abused.
Yes, it is. People would need 12 pills to be treated for Covid, and doctors are requesting it in large doses. Why? To keep on hand for themselves and their friends and families and god knows who else? This is hoarding. Like hand sanitizer and toilet paper. If everyone took what they needed, we'd be okay.
NP here. So now you have a conspiracy against doctors hoarding it for their friends and family? You people are too much. DH could have hoarded sanitizer and face masks for his friends and family from the hospital but we have none. It's at the hospital to use when healthcare professionals see patients.
It’s being widely reported that it’s being hoarded inappropriately.
We have 3 confirmed covid cases in my zip code, and the one pharmacist I talked to said she received 800 scripts for it the day after trump tweeted, and there is no more in stock in our county. So who is writing the scripts, then? It’s the doctors. The pharmacists told me she thinks the doctors are writing it for themselves and their families. Is that a conspiracy theory? Who is getting this medicine?
why does it matter? it’s a totally unproven treatment and everyone knows trump is an idiot.
Because I use it for Sjogrens/RA and cant get any now.

Yep. I’m so happy I was able to get my RX filled for 6 months. As it happens, I had just gotten my regular 90 day Rx in mail. My rheumatologist office called me as insisted that I see if I could get additional supply. He said he was getting calls from pharmacies of shortages. I was able to get an additional 90 day supply by paying out of pocket. My regular pharmacist said that yes, dentists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons and the like were clearly calling in scripts for off label use.

For the lupus patient? Yes, it sucks that your drug of choice is now needed during a pandemic for other patients. But you don't get the right to live while they die.
My niece is hoarding the drug for her lupus patients (she's a pharmacist) and if she loses her license, she will get no pity from me. That's not her job.
Which doctors? Where? How have their "results" been vetted?
Are you just hearing something on the radio and taking it as if it had gone through peer review? Do you even know what peer review is?
The right to try it is between the sick patient/family and their doctor.
right, which has zero to do with the scientific process needed to determine if it’s safe and effective.

Dear God.
Are we on the verge of a breakthrough?
Short answer: no. Long answer: also no.
and you know this based on what?
DP.
Most people recover, so this drug may or may not have made a difference.
where is your study showing it makes no difference?
where is your study showing it doesn’t make things worse?
i am not waiting for studies. at this point plentiful “anecdata” is good enough.
do you understand that we don’t actually know if it works until we do chemical trial?
I have a statistics degree from Harvard, thanks. you make decisions with the info you have, not with info you wish you had.
Understand too, that there are people here who want it to fail and for more people to die, as they see it as a way to destroy Trump - impeachment 2.0
No - we are hopeful for any and all drug therapies that will work and don't want more to die. Unfortunately, the President chooses to spew lies, inaccuracies and misinformation, so it's difficult to ascertain the truth.
