But for many people, being accessible to a city would be a plus and, depending on where you live, it could still feel far enough removed from home. And, of course, for MD residents the in-state tuition cuts the other way.

It depends by whom. Scientists and academics know lots of schools. More of them know UMD because of its research productivity. Rich Asians know lots of schools because they send very many here to attend. Most of them know both. Otherwise, most people either know no American schools, or they only know Harvard.
