I can't for the life of me recall who the valedictorian and salutatorian were for my school almost 20 years ago but many of the smart kids in my circle went on to be doctors.

Working on Wall Street sounds soul-sucking to me, and I was accepted to both Harvard and Yale.

Went to a surprisingly non-prestigious religious college and then NYU law school. Is now in-house counsel at a fashion designer. She seems happy.

Public high school in a state not known for public schools....I think there was a two-way tie. One made a bunch of money in the early tech stuff and I think just has a chill life in the Bay Area maybe running a start up. I think the other is a doctor/professor in a cool town.

She was a good friend of mine. She owns her own veterinary practice, which was her dream in high school. Married, one kid. Very happy.

Valedictorian at a small private high school is a commander in the Navy, after going to the Naval Academy. Salutatorian went to a highly ranked university in VA, married and had three kids. Have no idea what either of them make but they both seem to be comfortable.

The people from my high school class who make the most money were the slackers who inherited businesses from their dads.

Highly regarded all girl’s private. She is a SAHM of 5. Had her first baby at 22, a month shy of her first wedding anniversary. In fact, all of the top 5 girls married on the younger side and had babies when the rest of us HS slackers were in grad school or early careers.

Interesting. I went to a similar school and I was the only one of my circle of high achievers with children as our our 20th reunion. Others in the top 5 were (1) an investment banker (married, no kids), or (2-5) lawyers (1 married and 3 unmarried - all without kids).

Selective private school. We did not rank but the "top" boy and girl of each class was commended and gave speeches at the graduation.

The boy went to Harvard and then a PhD program at another top university. Is an adjunct professor somewhere. I just looked him up. Correct: he is a lecturer, in other words, not a tenure track professor.

The girl went to Penn and then became some sort of therapist. No advanced degrees. Works out of some clinic.

Each class at my school had 80 students and when I look at the outcomes of my year and the years around us, and although we didn't rank you still knew who was the tippity top of students and who was in the next rung down and the pattern is pretty clear, the next rung down has done the best.

Ours became an attorney.
