Don't know don't care. It's been amazing for my shy anxious kid.

It is great for some. Not a good fit for others. I was dorky, but it was not a good fit for me. Mileage will vary.

It’s for nerds that need fresh air

I know this is a zombie thread, but yes it is kind of dorky, and honestly that's part of what my son loves about it. Its not competitive. It doesn't rely on being the best. Its just a place to have fun be goofy and do childish things together.

I think it’s mostly for “nice kids” which typically (but not always) excludes the jocks. Almost always excludes the bullies. So I guess those “cool kids” would label it as “dorky” but it’s a benefit in my book.

Love scouts. DS is also a Varsity athlete but he lives the outdoors. Troop goes hiking, camping kayaking, mountain biking, etc once a month. It encourages service to others and mandates volunteer hours. It also mandates leadership and problem solving, working with others in a way sports do not. You do get quite a few challenging kids and need to learn to support and mentor them.
I loved the merit badge system. DS had to contact and meet with adults with expertise in various areas. He used it to look at future careers - architecture, environmental sciences, aviation, engineering, and game design.

I find a mix of kids, we are near a military base and many of the Troop are the opposite what I would consider dorky.

Girl scouts are more dorky than boy scouts, but not everyone is cool. So, if your kid likes it go for it.
