65. I grew up in a blue collar family. Occasional spankings by my dad along with the threat of his belt. My best friend grew up in a family that was on the very high end of UMC or low end of wealthy, her parents were academic professionals as well, and her dad also threatened and occasionally used the belt. Also, we lived in a small working class town and my friend grew up 2000 miles away in a major metro area, we were protestant and her parents were Catholic turned Quaker (dad) and atheist Jew (her mom) which suggests to me that the practice pretty much cut across social and cultural lines. Also we were from bigger families -- 5 kids in mine, 7 in hers.
Yet, neither of my parents was ever spanked, except my mom spanked exactly once by her dad, for getting a D.

My husband and I both were spanked as kids in our respective homes. We both vividly recall how awful it was (it was terrifying & deeply painful physically and emotionally) and we never, ever spanked our kids. Our kids eventually heard about spanking from classmates and asked us about it. We were honest about having been spanked, and explained that we didn't think it was ok. They were horrified to hear that their grandparents had spanked us. Our parents would not spank our kids now, but they have no interest in facing or discussing their choices or their behavior. I was shocked to learn that some of my peers spanked their kids

One time a friend made me laugh during prayer and my mom took me in the bathroom and spanked me. That’s the only one I remember.

29 and yes spanking is what my parents called it. Years of therapy has taught me that it was abuse. Started out as open handed spanking when I was young. My dad then progressed to whipping us with belts and shoes, and occassionally a wooden paddle as we got older and making us cry got more difficult. This continued well into my teens. He was also not opposed to slapping us across the face for any percieved disrespectful act or thought (for example, having the audacity to appear angry or while being verbally berated). I left home for good at 19 when, while home on break, he flew into a rage punch me in the face(I'm female btw).
I think that for spanking to be effective and not used as an outlet for anger and frustration is too thin a line for most people to tread. It's definitely not one I trust myself to flirt with, so I do not use physical force to punish my children.

Hitting a child is hitting a child, there's not really a "normal" way to do this to begin with. Lesser degrees or different versions don't make it okay.

I'm a guy. I remember just a few spankings, and they were all deserved, I'm sure. I remember one time I must have been about six and I'd done something bad to my brother. My dad was very calm and sat down and turned me over his knee. It was a summer night, and I had shorts on with an elastic waist. I remember being shocked when I felt him grip the waistband and pull them down as I'm lying face down looking at the floor. And then he spanked me, but I also remember thinking "ahh, that didn't hurt all that much," so it must not have been very hard.

8:53 here and I have a similar story, only I was 13. Dad slapped me so hard my front left tooth broke in half. It had a cap for a while but as an adult I had to have it replaced with a fake tooth. It's pretty obvious when i smile too, since it's right in front. And same with my parents being nervous about the medical/dental treatment and telling me to say that I got in a fight with my brother. They were afraid of being reported to CPS.
Are you male or female? Disgraceful either way, but it's hard to imagine a dad knocking a daughter's tooth out.
I'm the first PP and I'm also female. I was squirming to avoid getting spanked (on my clothed butt, over the knee) and that's how I got the injury. I'm not excusing the spanking although it was probably a fairly unusual injury in the way it happened. What's interesting/ sad is that I can only remember my dad spanking me one other time besides that. It was definitely a much more regular thing from my mom.

I'm 48. I have a few memories of being spanked, but it wasn't a regular part of discipline in our house.
My youngest went through a phase where - when he was climbing up the stairs on all fours and if one of us was behind him - he'd stick his diapered butt out and collapse in a fit of giggles if we tapped it. That was kind of cute, I guess. But other than that, we never spanked or used any other kind of physical punishment. Just not who we are or how we parent.

53 and, yes, I was spanked as a kid but not beyond the age of 10 or 11. Back in the day, spanking was a fairly normal punishment.
Aside from swatting my toddlers on their diapered butts a couple of times when they were not listening and doing something that could really get them hurt (running towards the street for instance), I have not spanked my kids. I used time out or took privileges away from them from time to time but no slapping/spanking or any other kind of physical punishment. My kids are generally pretty easy and well behaved.
