We received a notification yesterday for our neighborhood school. However, please riddle me this. We were offered and accepted a spot at a lottery school last Friday 5/24. We had originally put in for ED for our neighborhood school prior to the 5/15 deadline, as we were still on lottery waitlist. Now that we have cleared waitlist, accepted spot at lottery, how will our ED registration transfer? Also, the lottery we accepted at is one that is overenrolled for ED, so, my understanding is that there was a lottery for ED done on 5/24, and families will be notified on 6/1.

Any thoughts or insights in to trying to preserve our ED enrollment somehow and not be inadvertently pushed out of the running because of the delay in lottery school offers and acceptances? Why can't APS just line up these timelines so that they are more logical and orderly?!?!?! TIA.

No, you can’t do this. While second graders can be released without they teacher meeting the parent/caretaker, the student is not supposed to leave without a parent, nor if the child supposed to hang around school grounds unattended. If the parent/caretaker does not show up, the child is supposed to go to the office to have their parents called. If it’s a chronic issue, the school can refer the matter to DFS for investigation.

All the more, I want to see it in printed somewhere on the APS website. I take that the norm is 4th grade up needs no parents authorization; 3rd grader needs parents authorization; 2nd grader??

After 199kids APS extended day needs a supervisor. Given that McK is over 250, I am assuming that they need another supervisor and or far more staff. Why can't the other APS schools do it? I suspect it's staffing. if we can't find enough bus drivers, do we really think we can find enough extended day staff?

Well, the schools hold many times that number of kids during the day, so its disingenuous to suggest there isn't physical space to be had. It is about allowing extended day to use extra space- much like McKinley magically figured out how to do for its 35 or so kids that were on the wait list. McKinley didn't increase the schools physically space, as the announcement said. administrators there gave extended day more dedicated space. It's not rocket science.

And. PP re the numbers on the wait list, I'm not sure that's relevant for at least 2 schools waitlisted- Claremont and Ashlawn both have more than 30 kids on the wait list, which certainly supports funds for additional staff.

I think its an outrage that the schools allow PTAs to hold enrichment classes in the school's empty classrooms yet supposedly they "don't have enough space" to expand the extended day program. And, if they cannot hire enough qualified extended day staff, they should increase the salaries because we parents will gladly pay more for the staff to be adequately compensated.

Is this true at the schools with waitlists- that they will still be hosting after school enrichment programs? I agree with you if so. Our school doesn't have a waitlist but is very close by the published numbers. I would expect them to scale back enrichment to make more room for aftercare kids if that would help in any way.

Are enrichment activities the same in APS as they are in FCPS? We have to pay for the enrichment classes and they meet for an hour one day a week. Which would not be enough coverage for most parents and would be more expensive then aftercare by a good amount.

Bummer about the Y being maxed out.
