This brings me back to the days when I read Capitol Hill Style religiously and the riskiest thing discussed was how big your rectangular-looking bag would be and/or pearl size.

You don’t remember the lace bodysuit with no explanation of how to style, or for what occasion it would be appropriate?

Also, I remember her calling all her readers who asked for clarification idiots. In fact, I seem to remember her telling off her readers a lot. Those were the days. That blog still a thing?

It’s still a thing, but the series of bad life choices that used to be somewhat amusing in an eye roll-inducing way finally caught up to her. Belle’s current state of affairs is pretty depressing.

I am not fashionable because I am not creative and don’t have a knack for it. So I am low which looks like intentional frump. I am tall and slim; people used to tell me I looked “like a model!”. But I am also shy, so shy plus unaware and I look casual frump. I wish I had a fashion leader. And I am not wealthy, so how can I good on an Old Navy budget??

Amal is aspirational, not practical. It’s good to see the heights, and plan from there. She is too beautiful.

Then I realized I was carrying the ultimate lemming bag, from HS kids to serious urban proffesionals. Fine, it's plain, lightweight, functional. But so are many others.

I don’t have one. But I do have a NF jacket that is 13 years old. I’ll keep wearing it too because it’s warm and indestructible.

Yep. Plus we don’t all look like Amal. That woman could wear a potato sack and look chic.

+ 1,000 I like you! I work from home so op probably thinks I am sub-basic but, I don't care what they think!

I used to be this when I lived in DC. Now I live in Dallas and I see how fashion really can make a difference on one's overall appearance. Especially as they get older. A well dressed man or woman is like good art, pleasing to the eye. Frumpy is an eye sore. Basic is boring. You can have both- the intellectual and good fashion sense.

Degrees and families and pets and professional accomplishments don't prevent you from using conditioner or drying your hair before coming into work and don't turn around and ridicule those who like Sephora and had the nerve to wear a dress to work and claim that it doesn't bother you.

But the OP herself is saying that this is awful and ewwwwww.. She specifically criticized women wearing an Ann Taylor dress and having hair blown out in waves.

Find me super fashion forward HOARDES of working women in another city please. Sure, the fashion magazines and art careers are most likely more fashion forward. Outside of those, show me a city where office drones dress fashion forward. I'll wait.

Tokyo, Copenhagen

Let's try an American city. My argument is that this isn't a DC thing. It's an American thing.

Spent plenty of time in Tokyo. Most 20s-40a working people are in a VERY basic uniform, black suits, tailored shirts (women too) what makes them look more chic IMO is that most people are a different stature (read:slim) and tailoring is slim and chic looking across the spectrum of price points, the uniqulo suit and the Philip lim suit all cut narrow and looks better even if a super basic outfit

also most have great hair. that helps

This is not basic in the definition being used here, this is stylish and fashionable. These clothes are not flashy but worn in a stylistic sense.

Not Ann Taylor fashion.

I like the Tokyo comments- agreee.

It’s a one way rivalry. Basic people are unaware they are being judged.

Unless you are intentionally basic; ie “norm core”.

Norm core transcends intentional fashion.

Also I think " basic" as used currently colloquially does not just mean plain.

I like most of these, except for the pastel tweed and #12, whatever that is, but I guarantee you that as a petite woman with DD cup size, almost all these outfits would look DC frump on me.

"Basic" means plain and unremarkable in appearance regardless of income and upbringing. It can also apply to your personality and attitude. Not sure about the middle class designation since in Britain class is social. In the U.S. class is determined purely by income. I've only heard the term applied to women. For the most part women who are called basic don't believe that they are. I don't know anyone who brags that they are basic.
As far as the OP I see plenty of stunning and fashionable woman of all shapes and colors around town. Their comment is obviously based on a very narrow sampling, their co-workers, social circle or who they choose to pay attention to. Also, a lot of women in the area come from somewhere else so they bring their blah fashion sensibilities with them.

No it isn't.
