No, just read a newspaper. Hermès in Paris refused service to Oprah because she was black just a few years back. The clerk thought she couldn’t afford a purchase at their store. Big mistake!

If you read the book, the hotel is supposed to be one of the most exclusive, private hotels in the world, so the snottiness of the staff and their prejudices aren't all that unexpected.

I'm white, haven't read the book yet, but saw the movie Thursday and Saturday. LOVED IT.

The lead actress is so pretty and easy to relate to, the movie made me want to go to Singapore and I am so glad to have gone.

A coworker is bringing in the book for me to borrow.

I felt like I could completely relate to the chinese guilt (jewish guilt), the making old recipes with family members, gossiping with friends, etc. LOVED the fashion.

Loved this! I didn't know anything about this movie, hadn't read the book, but was intrigued by the hype and liked the idea of using my rare movie going $$ to support a diverse film. It was fantastic to watch the beautiful couture, and scenery. I really enjoyed it. The theater was packed too. I laughed and cried! My husband enjoyed it too, for what it's worth.

I saw it yesterday and thought it was so funny. I want to eat my way through Singapore now. While the fashion articles are all about the big time gowns from the film, I really want to know about her more casual dresses; specifically, the one she wore after the bachelorette party and pre-fashion montage with the pink flowers, and the one she wore in the mahjong scene
