On a side note, the people in Ward 8 ARE in fact hungry. There are currently three grocery stores servicing Wards 7 and 8 combined; most areas of the city average six grocery stores per ward. “There’s nowhere we can walk to go to the grocery store. … You have people in these communities where maybe they’re disabled, maybe they’re older and they can’t walk anywhere either, so a food delivery service is exactly what people like that need,” she said.

Since y’all are so interested and invested in what’s going on in Ward 8 go ahead and sign this petition to ensure food delivery services serve all Washingtonians equally by delivering to all eight wards.

I can honestly say that I'm less upset by Trayon's White's comments/actions than by the repetitive attempts here to say that they "aren't that bad."

I actually don't care what happens with Trayon White as an individual. What I would like is recognition that anti-semitism among people of color is on the rise, with the cause of the Palestinians a convenient cover for those accusations. For American Jews, it increasingly feels like (mostly mild, "all Jews are like this") anti-semitism is ok on the left and the right. It's alarming.

There are a variety of reactions to White, including a variety from individual Jews and Jewish groups. As such, I don't think it is fair or appropriate to refer to them as the "tribe". Certainly not all Jews in DC are reacting the way the prominent poster in this thread has been. All of us should be concerned about increased animosity between minority groups. Obviously there are some who would see increased black/Jewish tensions to be a positive development and we clearly don't want to play into their hands.

You may not agree with their perspective, and I don't, but it is still their perspective whether you agree with it or not. Ward 8 residents will not increase their support for White because they are hostile to Jews, but because like most people, they resent attacks by outsiders.

I'm not annoyed. I was describing the perspective of the people he represents. That is the only group that matters to him. You want to act like nobody but you has their own perspective. You cannot point to one single blatantly anti-Semitic act by White. You are interpreting things to come to that conclusion. Why do you believe that he waited on the sidewalk at the museum rather than believing his explanation that he toured the museum separately from the group? You don't seem to realize that the Nation of Islam provides a number of social services in Ward 8, including providing food. If the DC government forces the NOI to stop doing that (and I'm not even sure how that would be possible), who is going to do it? Are you going to go to Ward 8 and hand out food?

I'm not overlooking the contribution to Farrakhan. To the contrary, I think that White should suffer whatever legal ramifications exist for that potentially illegal and clearly unethical contribution. But, I think that we need to understand that your attitude is that very poor people should refuse food and services because of things someone from Chicago said about people who don't live in Ward 8. I just don't see how you think that can be a winning argument.

I’m loving how all the sudden Ward 8 is of interest to so many. Maybe some good will come out of this heightened awareness and District residents will find a way to pay attention to some other issues that need addressing besides one fool’s big mouth.
