Inexplicably, the residents in the east side of the county seems to be very supportive of the Kirwan commission report which proposed to reallocate state money (collected from Montgomery County property tax) to Baltimore which would create a 20%-70% reduction to the MCPS operating budget. This will put any construction project on indefinite hold for a long time.

It was stupid for the BOE to make this diversity priority. In light of the budget issues, they will have no choice but to look at boundaries from a utilization standpoint which may or may not give MCPS the SES demographics it wants. The alternative to keep kids in highly over enrolled and under enrolled schools while the BOE harms real estate values with their empty threats or promises depending on which cluster you are in...

QO and Wootton are similar academically(both top ranked schools) and wealth-wise(look at the houses, cars, and home prices in either district) but the environment of the two is drastically different. While Wootton is known for being very competitive, academically inclined, and "toxic", QO is known for being more about school spirit and being well-rounded with top academics as well. It's all about the type of environment and community you want for DC!

It won't make the "winners'" houses appreciate because no one will trust that this school wont be next by the time their kids are in school. If MCPS honestly wants to balance FARMS it will have to keep shifting the boundaries or it will have achieved nothing. It is another huge win for NOVA.

Um, the prices are about $100K different from houses in Horizon Hill compared to Fallsmead and Fox Hills West.

The Olmstead one has 1 more bathroom, is remodeled, new floors, brand new kitchen, etc... it has been on the market for 50 days

The other one was just listed. Nothing remodeled, 1 less full bath. Still over $50K higher and will sell this week for that low price.

So yes, the first will eventually sell for $700K and the other will sell for $780K and you will have to put $30K minimum into it for updates.

The fallsmead home is bigger, has a better and more traditional floor plan, and is further from the road (not backing into a major street)

Also, look at the homes sold in the last year between the two neighborhoods. The price difference for comparable homes is closer to $50K, and in some cases about the same.

It's just not apples to apples comparing neighborhoods. We can probably find plenty of examples where the home prices were equal and where they were not. In general, the Horizon Hill homes will be larger than those in Fallsmead. Whether the neighborhoods are comparable in price is really unclear. I imagine that if Horizon Hill were put in the catchment for Fallsmead ES, Horizon Hill homes would probably be higher priced than Fallsmead Homes. So there is likely some minor adjustment for schools, but it isn't as big as $100k. If Horizon Hill were put into Cold Spring, I imagine the price change would be similarly up a bit.

That was my point.. the price differential is not $100K, but more like $50k.

In any case, the original point was that Wootton home prices won't go down *that* much. People are running around like the sky is falling, and it's not. Your kids will do just as well with a few more FARMs kids in the school. They are not contagious by any means.
