Because if an exceptional URM got a spot then that spot should have gone to their mediocre white kid. It's never mediocre white kid with the grandparents who donate $2 million a year that "stole" the seat, just the exceptional URMs who make up 10 percent of the student body.
It’s more along the lines of a less well qualified URM “taking” the spot of a white or Asian applicant with significantly stronger academic qualifications than the URM. But the S St has said that that’s fine, because society needs to get URMs in the pipeline of elite institutions.
