It predates Trump, although he certainly doesn't help. It dates all the way back to the Revolution when they called us peasant "Jonathan" and ridiculous "Yankee Doodle."

The British upper class has always looked down on Americans. My Cambridge- and Oxford-educated British relatives certainly do. One actually told us, "Americans are the scum of the earth, except for you, of course." Meanwhile, several of my highly educated British relatives have explored moving over here. Go figure....

The Brits also make a hobby winding people up, aka taking the piss. In other words, they're busy insulting each other as much as you.

My cousins came over a year ago and raved about how we rarely honk at each other. They had heard about it back home and were so happy it was true, even when they drove in NYC. London traffic is really bad....

As a kid we used to visit my London relatives and I dreamed of living there. The last few visits everybody was rude and/or falling out of bars drunk and in skimpy outfits in freezing weather. Not to mention the prices. Oh well, I guess I'll just put up with Trump, hopefully it won't be too long now.

Actually, you just nailed why they hate us. Despite all our internal flaws, Americans walk around thinking we are "the best" which basically means we think we are better than everyone else. Given the opioid epidemic, our inability to elect an adult in the White House, Nazi's openly marching in our streets, issues of police brutality that always make international news..., our arrogance doesn't go over well.

Of course it's better here than Mexico. This thread isn't about Mexico, the pp was referring to being the best relative to people in Britain and other European countries. I don't see a huge influx of illegal Europeans.

I lived in England for five years. Yes they would give me some crap initially, but once they found out I could make a decent cuppa and watched Eastenders, we were cool.

They were just used to Americans who knew nothing about their culture and didn't want to learn.

I can tell you this, I'm a Brit living in the USA and I fully intend to become an American citizen in the next year or so. I absolutely love it here, flaws and all.

I have no interest in living in England anymore, there are some wonderful things about it but the country has pretty much destroyed itself in the past decade.

I think it was Benedict Cumberbatch who said in an interview that his ancestors owned slaves in Barbados. He even used the word "coloured," instead of black in one interview. They built their fortune when they were compensated for loss of their property, meaning slaves. I think compensation would equal couple million pounds today.

Yes that is a horrible truth. The Jews were persecuted for centuries. But since we've had "The Rights of Man" and 20th century turned a corner, there have been KKK and lynchings and murders. Its only comparable to the Middle East and parts of Africa which have faced genocide. Not Europe.

People from other countries are entitled to voice their opinions of world leaders who would visit their country. They don't have to blindly fall in line when they see a leader who has no respect for women, openly suggests police rough up anyone they arrest and openly courts Nazi support. This is our current leader and he would be the one currently representing our country, so they have every right to not want him coming over and getting the treatment normally accorded to a visiting dignitary. One man's dumb is another man's principled opposition.

I am pretty sure the Danes were after the Brits. Some Brits married into Danish families in the West Indies (now US Virgin Islands), which I allowed them to continue to capitlaize on free labour in the production of sugar.

A lot of upper-class families in England owned sugar plantations in the West Indies. Check out the people associated with Jane Austen.

Eastern European here, who lived in 3 European countries and visited many other countries. So true, my mom told me she will disown me if I dated, married, had anything to do with a black guy. She doesn't even pretend to be accepting and mask it. She doesn't know any black, Asian, etc.. people. My BIL is so racist, that my kids don't want to talk to him and tell me that he is stupid and ignorant. I don't think he ever met a black person. In Norway, they will cross the street if they see a black person coming towards them and warned me not to go shopping in "Chinese district," (it is literary half of one street and a few stores in alleys around) as I will be in danger. This was said by an educated white Norwegian couple who had kids at a private school I was teaching at. Europeans like to act like they are not racist, but isn't that easy if you never met a person of another ethnicity. And not only that, Germans hate Turkish and Eastern Europeans, English hate just about everybody, French hate the Spanish, Croats hate Serbs(even though they speak the same language, they fought against each other in several wars). Heck, Croats burned Nikola Tesla's house twice because he was an ethnic Serb, but now they claim he was a Croat... Polish hate Russians, all hate Gypsies, all hate Bulgarians, but even Bulgarians hate themselves, on and on it goes....


Ha-ha-ha, I live in the South, and my E. European mom was shocked we were not planning to move when DS was born. To raise a child with so many minorities around? OMG. Come to think of it, her hatred of the South is akin to that of the DCUM liberal crowd!
