The only reason colleges keep Greek societies around is because they are filled with wealthy alumni, and their children.

Yup. My husband and I were just talking about which one of us will send it to our son, who may well want to go to a college with a strong frat culture, and lead the discussion with him about it. I'm not ready to re-read or talk about it yet. It was just so devastating.

Do others do this too? We watched the ESPN 30 for 30 on the Duke lacrosse incident with him and discussed the Brock Turner case at length with both him and his sister. I'd be curious about other cautionary or thought-provoking pieces people think are important to share with their high schoolers.

Crazy cult school!

Penn State has issues. The presentment for this case is horrifying -- as the kid's injuries were super obvious AND the "brothers" knew it bc they were googling re blood alcohol levels; head injuries etc. And they bullied the one new brother/pledge who wanted to take him to the hospital bc they wanted to cover their own asses. And there are texts after re whether there would be private lawsuits against them.

Not 2 yrs ago there was some frat shut down for widely distributing pictures of naked female students. And then there's Sandusky. And then there's the election of Jay Paterno (son and defender of the famous Paterno who supposedly knew nothing of the kids being molested in his own locker room despite the fact that an assistant coach came and told him) to the school's board. The make loud noises when something happens and give kids a slap on the wrist and then distract by screaming about how much money you raise for THON and how you won a football Big 10 championship and now have a RB with Heisman potential - culture will continue strong at that school. Don't care what the school is ranked -- something isn't right over there; why don't we repeatedly see all the other state flagships in the nation with these problems over and over and over?? Can't be at all the good kids go to those schools and the bad apples go to PSU - it's got to be something the school is or isn't doing.

No. I'm not even a PSU grad so I have no skin in the game here. But I definitely don't hold it against any current student/grad whose resume crosses my desk for hiring purposes. What does someone graduating in 2018 or 2005 or whenever who had no affiliation with the football team have to do with sexual abuse? It was confined to football locker rooms -- they couldn't possibly have known about it. It was kept under wraps by coaches, high level administration, and university brass -- again I don't think your average student in the finance or English department could have known anything about it or the cover up or could have stopped it in any way. So why hold it against them?? Sure if a former football coach were to apply (which would be odd given that I'm in finance), sure then I may think harder about when the scandal happened, were they on campus then, could they have known anything. But for Joe Schmoe PSU grad - nope - has nothing to do with them. And I don't particularly care if they're obsessed with JoePa, defend him or not etc; in the same way that I don't sit there in interviews trying to divine whether the applicant is an NRA member, pro/anti choice, religious or atheist etc.

Their endowment is not "poor." It's one of the highest endowments for a state school in the country. There are countless state schools that literally have 1/50th of what PSU has. And most big football schools have alumni that are "over the top" in support of their school.

I think endowment per pupil is a better reflection of the endowment strength. PSU is I believe the biggest university system in the nation.
