Similar experience here at the game I attended. In fact there didn't seem to be many people paying attention, most were sitting around drinking beer and socializing...if being buzzed is a requirement to enjoy the game that may limit the audience.
Well holy shit, football will go under.

I guess you aren't a Nats fan and know who Dusty Baker is.![]()
if you knew anything about baseball, you know that the manager has been minimized in their power/role and it flows from the GM/front office.
dusty baker's gm is white.
Are all GMs and President of Baseball Ops white males? I cannot think of one who is not, and yes, with analytics, the FOs have substantial say. Also, as of last year, there were only four women in baseball ops and two of them are with the dodgers. There should be more diversity overall in front offices and in managing positions.
The analyst was probably referring to only vp/agm level or above and not full front office
as someone who worked in a baseball front office very briefly (the pay is atrocious and i didn't love the game enough to try to make it to GM - which is a more rare job than US senator), there are more than four women in baseball ops. orioles have one for example. so to astros, dodgers, and a few other teams.
If you mean GM/AGM level, then no. I beleive there is only one woman - Jean Afterman with the yankees, who is rumoured to potentially get the GM job if cashman isn't re-upped in the bronx.
there are gm's who are not white males - farhan zaidi is with the dodgers, but he reports to Friedman, who is president. cubs have a vp/agm that's nonwhite (shiraz rehman) but he reports to hoyer and epstein. al avila is cuban (tigers). THe guy at the marlins is black but i dont' think he'll keep his job when ownership switches to the new owners after loria. the pirates have FO staff that are not ex-players that are black. Good guys.
mlb is doing a huge push for diversity in FO's. As someoen who has been to a number of winter meetings, there are actually a lot of women (more than i thought there would be) who are interested in breaking in.
If a woman wants to break in today, my advice would be for her to go to a top school (ivy or top lac) and major in a stem subject where she gains programming skills.
Thanks. I am the PP and was basing my comment on info from an analyst from last year (or maybe the year before). Happy to hear there are more women now (or maybe the analyst was just wrong).

problem?
I am thinking about it. For starters, I would ramp up efforts at improving minorities' access to baseball. Diversification must happen on the field too. My extensive baseball card collection includes African American greats from the 1970s and 1980s. That needs to come back. I had not thought about the corporate outing angle. That's a tough thing to overcome. I don't know, maybe I've got issues with gentrification in general... And of course I want people to enjoy themselves.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:There's a whole conversation that's been going on in the sports world about how Black people dont play baseball. Adam Jones is one of few. I became aware of the ongoing convo during the Kaepernick take-a-knee thing...and how it wasn't relevant in the baseball world.
OP, if this is something that you are *really* interested in, all you have to do is google "why dont black people play baseball". The first URL was this espn article from a few years ago http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/9186117/why-african-americans-play-pro-baseball
Yes, it's just cringe inducing to me to see the lack of diversity in the attendees. It should make everyone feel ashamed.
Anonymous wrote:This is one of the craziest race posts I've seen on DCUM. OP seems to be assuming that black people aren't showing up because the games are not accessible. There are PLENTY of black families in this area who can afford an outing to the Nats. They choose not to go. Who cares? I am black and have gone with my family to Nats games. I don't feel the least bit uncomfortable. In fact, at one game, I was rather surprised by the number of black people in the crowd, knowing it's not the most popular game. OP, you can save your concern - I don't think there are black families looking longingly at the ball park wishing they could go. If there were, they would be there at the games.

If you knew anything about baseball, you would know that the manager, not the GM makes all in-game decisions That is Dusty; That is why Matt Williams was fired. Rizzo is Dusty's boss, but is not in the dugout during the game.
