Sometimes I'm solo and sometimes with DW.

I fly long haul frequently. Some of the routes would put me in transit/planes 30+ hours. Therefore, I will typically take an extended layover somewhere in between to get some rest and see some sights.

If there is something interesting to DW during the time, such as the cherry blossoms in Japan, she will fly over to meet me.

As stated before, depends upon OPs moral compass...

You folks have just been blundered by the media that has focused on one scandalous area. Thailand. They don't focus on London. Or Paris. Or Rome. Or Florence. But the same shit happens there.

I'm the Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from early in the thread. I saw it first hand and it wasn't in just one area. There wasn't a single place in the entire country that prostitution wasn't readily available. The bigger the place, the more options. I worked for a provincial government office and at the holiday parties the office through, the boss hired prostitutes to 'entertain'. They often double as singers (singing is a big thing in Thailand and everyone does it). I also know a number of families whose DD's were sent to be 'housekeepers' in large cities - they weren't exactly keeping house. The families were too poor to support the kids and the girls didn't have many options. It's heartbreaking. What was even harder was going to visit friends doing HIV education/prevention. Crushing.

So, no, it's not being 'blundered' by the media. I saw it first hand. Oh, I've also been to London, Paris, Rome and Florence (and a lot of other places). In addition to Thai, I also speak German, Italian, Russian and Romanian. I've seen a lot of prostitution in a lot of places but nothing that rivals Thailand.

But, if this weren't a solo trip, I'd be all for OP and her DH going. It's a fabulous place. I just have to question why a married guy would go there solo for vacation.

A lot of places yes. Places known for child sex trafficking, hell no. Does he have a hobby tied to that region - cooking, art collection, architecture tourism? Does he have a business interest in the region? If not, seems fishy.

I lived in Thailand for eight years. It's a beautiful country with lots to do-night clubs and sex are not the only reason people go there. That said, I have seen the seedy side of Bangkok and Chiang Mai and foreign (particularly white, western) men traveling solo are definitely a target. Not saying your DH is going there for sex tourism, but I would be highly suspicious if I were you. It's very far away for a married man with kids to be traveling just for fun. Why aren't you going with him? If my husband was planning a trip to Thailand I'd be pissed if he didn't take me!
