Because many of us think about people in other circumstances when making policy decisions. For a lot of issues, it isn't just about me - the upper middle class white chick who is 40-something and has a stable home and reliable birth control. It's about the 16-year-old or the 20-year-old (or poor 35-year-old or abused 40-year-old) whose life would be turned upside down by circumstances somewhat beyond their control.

I had an unplanned pregnancy in my 30's and ultimately decided to go through with the pregnancy. But it was a tough time, and I had to make the decision that was best for me. Parenthood isn't for pussies; nobody should have to take it on if they don't feel ready. And birth control isn't always reliable - mine wasn't.

I think that's inaccurate. The vast, vast majority of pro-choicers are not advocating abortion, or trying to push it onto women who want to have babies. They want women to have the choice. Whether that choice is abortion is up to the woman at issue.

I prefer the terms pro-choice/anti-choice.

Exactly! I'm pro-choice (as in women MUST have a choice), but personally - I hope I would never have to make that choice, for whatever reason.

Don't worry. Soon we will be in a post human computer robot society. The computers will be disgusted by how stupid and cruel humans were to each other. It is quite possible we are already living in a virtual reality and some teenage computer is just torturing us like we are living in the Hunger Games. Humans hurt other humans both intentionally and unintentionally.

What is frivolous to you in your life may not be frivolous to someone else in their life. Why is this so complicated for you to understand? It's my body. It's my damn choice. Not yours. You worry about what you do, and I'll worry about what I do. I hate that anyone else thinks they know my life or can dictate what I should / shouldn't be able to do with my body. And yes, I do hate pro-lifers because for the life of me, I cannot understand why you can't keep your business out of the lives of others.

Absolutely, I agree with you. I would love to provide a safe home for unwanted children. Its something we need to work on as a society.

Really? How about just start with universal healthcare, and paid maternity leave and paid sick leave (as a federal law), affordable childcare?
But hey, that's never happens, conservatives are OK with letting government decide if women should have a baby, but not OK to pay for the consequences, and help raising that baby

Absolutely! But I am even more grateful that I was not aborted. I am now a great mom.

Looking at the bigger picture, you think ALL unwanted, unloved babies should be brought into this world knowing that the vast majority of those born into poverty won't be able to escape it? May not end up as happy as you?

I think all babies should be wanted and loved. Such basic human needs.

Good luck proving rape to get that abortion. It's essentially impossible, and just a talking point from the anti-choice crowd to appease people who aren't paying attention. In their minds, the woman deserved it.

The flaw in the human race is that we are not eggs that are hatched in a nest. Inside a mother is supposed to be the safest place for a growing baby but then humans thought up abortion so now it is not. If we could somehow programs humans to start laying eggs in a nest we would all be better off.

I guess this is rhetorical but why is OP's assumption that is shouldn't be a personal issue for most women? It's about women's bodies and autonomy. Even if it is purely elective, why wouldn't it be personal?
