I think if you know her taste and comfort level to get a car without testing driving it, than it's easier to select a car and get it.
Or you can make your own gift certificate and print out and put on there an amount you think you want to pay. Like making a gift certificate with the amount of $25,000 and let her choose the car up to this amount. Then, she would have time to test drive and see if the car would fit the family because you now have a kid and if there are more planned, you don't want just any car.

I always jealoused people living in the USA cos they have excellent opportunity to buy good cars for reasonable prices. I live in Canada and thinking over buying a car at Michigan ( tend to use brokers from https://clearit.ca/ ). Anyways I think it will be cheaper than going to the US by myself.

I'd be pissed if DH brought home a minivan. While I'd appreciate the surprise SUV, I'd still prefer to have input as to the model, color, etc.

It was probably good for him. I imagine a lot of people in middle America have never considered how weird it is to purchase a 75k car on a 275k salary. It's somewhat common and only because you can have five year car loans.

How do you all know what people you work with drive? I have absolutely no idea what cars my work colleagues drive.

Me think new young mommy is gonna have a tough time getting a raise showing up to work in a new Porsche truck.

And PS - be humble in life. If you have the means of purchasing a car without your spouse knowing, be grateful for that. Unfortunately, no amount of money can buy more life, when you've been given your final answer in heaven.
