I've registered people here. The last four digits of your SSN number or drivers license gets checked. People also know not to register illegally.

Illegal aliens know the law better than you! It's a myth that any aliens vote in elections on purpose, although a few have attempted to vote under the mistaken belief they are USC Citizens.

Being sympathetic to the plight of others is noble. But the US has only limited resources and charity begins at home. Actually, I think my priorities are in the right order.

I agree that we need to get a better handle on illegal immigration, but building an expensive wall and breaking up families is not the way to do it. I'm a teacher so I work with many undocumented families - some who've been here for a decade or longer. It is really difficult to fix your status once you've overstayed a visa (and overstays count for 40% of undocumented immigrants.) They would be required to travel back to their home country and then apply to come back, which can take anywhere from six months to several years. For example, I have one parent who was brought here as a kid, has been married to a citizen for eight years, has two children and another one on the way. What would you suggest? She is currently working here legally under DACA. Send her back because her parents brought her here when she was 8, break up her family? Send her back pregnant without prenatal care?

I've also worked in schools in the inner city and schools on reservations. Do you really think these areas are going to magically get supplies and materials and resources from the federal government when there are fewer immigrants here? We do need to get our priorities in order, but it should go people and families first with small businesses closely behind, and huge unethical multinational corporations that don't pay tax, the banking industry, and hedge fund managers way down the list.

I also come from a family of immigrants - way back though. My ancestors were Polish and German and arrived here before the Quota Acts which were really a reaction (just like today) to people like my family arriving, bringing their strange foods, traditions, and gasp! Catholicism. I know we, as a country, have a tendency to do this regularly and then we regret how we treated people years later.

As for learning English, I've seen the lines for adults immigrants to learn English and let me tell you, they are often out the door and around the building to get in.
