You're a STEM guy (or gal). Wouldn't necessarily expect you to know of a Southern SLAC. A safe bet is that you're also not the member of the country club set or have a kid at a Big 3, or are particularly preppy/well off/sophisticated. I did not go to Sewanee, though I did go to a NE SLAC you've also probably never heard of. I'm not a Sewanee booster, just a SLAC booster and one who knows that Sewanee might be a mystery to STEM guys in the NE, but produces polished, bright graduates who benefit from a rabid alumni network.

Not all elite private school kids can get into a top 10 university or SLAC. Sewanee is a good choice for someone who might not have the academic scores to make it top 10 or even top 30, but at Sewanee they get a great education and make great connections all in a comfortable (basically an extension of their private school existence) and super fun place.
