You're a STEM guy (or gal). Wouldn't necessarily expect you to know of a Southern SLAC. A safe bet is that you're also not the member of the country club set or have a kid at a Big 3, or are particularly preppy/well off/sophisticated. I did not go to Sewanee, though I did go to a NE SLAC you've also probably never heard of. I'm not a Sewanee booster, just a SLAC booster and one who knows that Sewanee might be a mystery to STEM guys in the NE, but produces polished, bright graduates who benefit from a rabid alumni network.

Being yet another DMV d-bag in training is nothing to be proud of either.

Visited Sewanee to give a talk a couple of years ago and had lunch with a dozen or so students in the related major. These were no doubt hand-picked students but I was very impressed. Have also interviewed a few students applying from Sewanee to a PhD program. Was even more impressed. Top students place very well in jobs and graduate programs.

Based on what I saw during my visit, faculty were very accessible, with students not averse to asking faculty they ran into on campus whether they would be in their offices later that day. Saw lots of students in faculty offices.

The campus is predominantly white. The setting of the college is isolated but gorgeous.

I have no doubt that a student could get an excellent education there.

I've never met an unsuccessful or ugly Sewanee grad.

The smartest person I know went there.

Not all elite private school kids can get into a top 10 university or SLAC. Sewanee is a good choice for someone who might not have the academic scores to make it top 10 or even top 30, but at Sewanee they get a great education and make great connections all in a comfortable (basically an extension of their private school existence) and super fun place.

This exactly describes the kids I know who went to Sewanee. Waspy, country club, private school types who had decent grades but not top.
