As a school employee looking to move to the area, I was most interested in Montgomery County Public Schools because the pay and the benefits were better than any neighboring district. Money talks

You get what you pay for....in long island where they pay teachers top dollar, you have hundreds of applicants vying for slots. This is true in most any profession....if you want the best and brightest then you must compensate them better than others (or offer other unbeatable benefits )

Montgomery County public schools are crap and 1/3 of the people there send their kids to private. But by all means put in tons more money for more of the same.
There aren't enough private & parochial schools to take 1/3 of the County students

But it should be the standard for people with costly advanced degrees who advocate for the most vulnerable people (homeless families, unaccompanied homeless youth, veterans, etc) year round?!?!
This is probably why some people think teachers lack self-awareness.

Who keeps comparing teachers to legal aid lawyers? That's a ridiculous comparison. I used to be a legal aid lawyer. The people who do it know they are being paid a small fraction of what they are worth (especially in DC where they are not unionized, unlike New York and Boston). Its basically like volunteer work with a stipend. Most people can't do it long term unless they have a trust fund or marry big law.
This should not be the standard for teachers.

I would have no problem paying teachers if they started working year round. With 3-4 weeks of leave like most occupations get.

Google starting salaries for legal aid. Heck, my cousin's starting salary as an engineer is the same as mcps starting salaries...and her salary is for 12 months!

Ha ha. Not so much. Legal aid funding is constantly being cut. A 3% raise would be huge. And as I said, they work 12 months a year. No winter or spring break. It isn't unusual for legal aid lawyers to moonlight. I know a few who consult on the side, and two who bartend.
