I agree with both of these things. There's definitely a book here, and I agree that he would be a great story for Mr. Money Mustache, at least he would have been before MMM shifted to his anti-carbon tirade.

There are some interesting books that have been written in this vein -- one by a guy who worked at a really classy restaurant, etc. People love to know what goes on behind the scenes! You're an interesting writer with great observations. I would read your book!

Yeah, for UberBLACK think Suburbans, Lincoln Towncars, Cadillacs. Pays well, but huge upfront cost for an independent driver.

So when do they see your destination? Right after they accept (and are en route to pick up), or only after they pick up? I've had a driver request I cancel when he was on his way to me, but he didn't ask where I was going.

Driver sees the destination when they start the ride in the app. I don't start the ride in the app until rider is inside and seated in the car. Cancels happen a lot for tons of reasons, don't worry about it. Just let the app do its thing and a driver will get there.

I have WPGC on practically 24/7, WKYS as an alternate. WTOP in the morning for traffic. No, I have never had someone ask me to change the radio ever. Either to turn it off (twice), or turn it up (all the time). Everybody likes Drake, lol. I set the radio volume about as low as it'll go but still be audible. I also never let a radio commercial run in the car with a passenger inside ever.

I have once. A jolly giant of a man and his wife asked very nicely to smoke as we were headed out on a long ride from Georgetown to Potomac at like 4 in the morning. I hesitated a second, then he said $10?, and I said fine. It was the last ride of the nite and the only time the car has ever been smoked in. Aired it out heavy on the drive home. As for everyone else, it takes a real jerk to even have the thought to ask to smoke in someone's car that they use for earning money.

I've been doing this consistently for two and a half years, practically since the launch of both uberX and Lyft in DC. I think I've got a few years left in me...but I'll quit with another rate drop. This current rate level is as low as I can stand it and for it to still be worth the time put into it. Here's the reality: autonomous cars are coming, but not realistically for 10 years at least. That's a still a long time for an actual human driver to be needed.

People who are good at this tend to enjoy it. Drivers frustrated over money don't make for very happy people.

A BLACK driver? Possibly. uberX driver nowadays? No. In the old days on uberX at $2.50/mile? Maybe. Someone on uberpeople ran the numbers on making $80,000/yr on current DC rates and it was something crazy like driving 4,300 hours and 75,000 miles in a year. That's about 12 hours/day X 365. Completely impossible. The problem is that there are only a few insanely profitable hours to work in a week but a ton of dead hours (middle of the night and middle of the workday during the week). When uber does their "uber math" they extrapolate that really high earning potential across the entire year to lure in new drivers on "possible incomes of up to $80k/year*".
