People would understand it if you says it upfront nonchalantly.
Free loaders shouldn't get the benefits of the beach house.
Op here.
We don't rent it out.
I'm not comfortable with strangers staying there, liability, damage, managing the rentals etc. The house is paid off, I just don't want to/can't really afford to pay $300-400 extra monthly for cleaning on top of utilities for people I let stay there.
(I got those numbers assuming it's twice a month, 150-200 each time)
We are paying upwards of $600/month for utilities alone
OP It sounds like you need to rent it out to meet your costs. Its OK to ask for cleaning from your guests, but there are many other expenses as well, which you cannot ask your friends-who-are-renting to pay for. Why do you think it costs $4000/wk for a rental?
Anonymous wrote:I'd also be happy to pay, if offered a free house. Just give them a heads up when you make your generous offer so they fully understand ahead of time. Don't spring the charge on them at the last minute.

Agree. The cost of cleaning should be included in rent if they rent from you. If they are your guests, under no circumstances would it be appropriate to ask for money for cleaning. What is wrong with you?!
The only thing tacky here is that you have to ask - your friends should INSIST they cover some of the costs. OP you are generous to loan it out. It's more than fair to ask for cleaning.

But do you hire a cleaner every time someone stays there?
