I am not reading 9 pages worth of responses. But, our friends have a beach house in Florida and are happy to let us stay there, they want it to be used. They ask us for money to cover a cleaning visit after we leave, like $150. We are happy to pay it. It's much less than paying for lodging would be!!

I'm not comfortable with strangers staying there, liability, damage, managing the rentals etc. The house is paid off, I just don't want to/can't really afford to pay $300-400 extra monthly for cleaning on top of utilities for people I let stay there.
(I got those numbers assuming it's twice a month, 150-200 each time)
We are paying upwards of $600/month for utilities alone
OP It sounds like you need to rent it out to meet your costs. Its OK to ask for cleaning from your guests, but there are many other expenses as well, which you cannot ask your friends-who-are-renting to pay for. Why do you think it costs $4000/wk for a rental?

That way, all the people staying in the house can chip in toward cleaning costs so one person isn't stuck with the bill and can give it to the owners/friends.

Absolutely not tacky. We have been lent our friends beach house and they actually have given us the option. I cleaned it myself once. Now, we pay their cleaning service direct. Easy Schmeasy. Everyone is happy.

OP, I would just not let people stay there unless you were there. Sounds like this is causing issues and concerns for you since you are worried about the utility costs and the cleaning costs.

Of course that's part of the established social ritual. Friends offer and you say no of course not.
