It is common knowledge that GDS sends more kids to Harvard than any other private school in this area...

Nope, Roxbury Latin in Boston sends more kids to HYPS than any other school in the country. Check it out. They typically put about 20% of their graduating seniors into Harvard. 14 Boys a year just to Harvard.

This is more than GDS sends, although GDS is acknowledged to hold the leading Harvard position among Washington privates.

Roxbury sent ~36% to the ivies, Stanford and MIT.

Trinity school (coed) and Collegiate (all boys) both in NYC sent ~41%.

Take a look at their tuition -- $29,300 -- must less than DC area major privates. Presumably they have a much larger endowment than local schools - having been around for 370 years -- but I must say it would be nice to have at least one school in the DC area that focused capital campaigns only on the endowment to lower tuition rather than building newer/better facilities.

There are a lot of delusional parents out there, no question. However, sports is a MAJOR hook at even the best academic institutions, and lots of kids from private schools in this area go on to play Division I and Division III sports at schools where their child's admission chances were no doubt boosted by their athletic prowess. So it's not irrational in the aggregate, although a lot of individual parents do appear to overrate their own child's relative talents and chances of being recruited for sports by an Ivy or excellent SLAC. However, the consolation prize is that playing on a team in high school is generally a positive for emotional/physical health. So, win/win proposition.
