The interesting thing is that guys who are total assholes at the same time are not generally considered to be creeps.

I don't know what makes a guy creepy, but I'd like to because I think I might fit the bill.
I'm married, in my 40s, and have absolutely no interest in/intention of cheating on my wife, but when I go out with groups of coworkers, etc., I find that the women in the group invariably end up edging away from me and are cool towards me afterwards. I don't think I do anything particularly creepy - I don't stare at chests, I don't flirt or engage in inappropriate conversation, I don't invade personal space, etc., but I'm clearly putting out some sort of vibe.

You could be right.
Sometimes I will meet someone & immediately feel creeped out by them even though I cannot pinpoint an exact cause. It is just that certain people give me a vibe that makes me uncomfortable.
I think many people base their like (or dislike) of someone based on gut instinct.
And now that you are less angry since age does mellow people, the vibe you give out not is a better and calmer one.

It's really just a combination of not respecting boundaries and being weird/unattractive. An ugly, fat guy who is polite, empathic and respects other's boundaries is not creepy. A "hot" guy who is aggressively hitting on you, in a crass manner, is creepy.
Good-looking guys can get away with things that unattractive guys can't, that's true of women, too. That's just life. In the end, we all get old and ugly, anyway.
