Should have never been near an airframe. He wasn't qualified going by his performance in the academy.

I am a veteran as well and the Republicans sold us out and continue to sell us out. However, Trump is not correct - John McCain WAS a hero.
Vet here. He flew aircraft on combat missions and was shot down. He kept his faith while confined and tortured. He is a hero.

Yes, he did those things but as a PP pointed out it doesn't make him a hero. It was all in the course of duty and happens over and over.
Staying behind with those who were also captive instead of leaving when offered the chance - again not heroic but definitely moral and the right thing to do. And really being a good person and doing the right thing even under duress - far, far more important in life than getting a label of "war hero"

He supports the maiming and killing of those in uniform for unjust caues.
He obtained his position dishonorably through nepotism.
Daniel Ellsberg is a hero.
That's not Trump's gripe. Trump's problem with McCain is that he doesn't think McCain was Rambo enough. It's that stunted, delusional Reality TV mindset that Trump is suffering from.

It's OK to complain about McCain's voting record.
Not OK to criticize his service in the military.

Just being in the military and performing your duties does not make you a hero. Being captured and held prisoner also doesn't qualify one as a hero. Let's not degrade the meaning of hero, it only disrespects those who truly are.
Do you know anything about John McCain? I know some things, yes
Do you know that he was flying extremely dangerous missions when he was shot down? Risky missions? The fact that so many were shot down speaks to the danger. It was his duty to fly those missions, was it not?
Do you know that he was kept in solitary confinement because of his resistance? All prisoners who have been kept in solitary confinement are hero's?
Do you know that he was tortured? All people who have been tortured are hero's?
Do you know that he turned down an opportunity to come home early? (it was offered because it was good propaganda--his dad was an admiral) Leaving would be breaking his creed, staying was his duty.
Because of this, he likely saved lives--it would have been discouraging to the other prisoners and would have given fodder to the Viet Cong propaganda machine.
Lots of this was beyond the call of duty. And, lots of the military are heroes besides the Medal of Honor winners. The Medal of Honor winners are those who went extraordinary lengths way beyond the norm. There are lots of other heroes, too.
I'm not seeing anything above the call of duty
