But I should add that I would never inquire about someone elses child.

Are you going to appeal? Were his scores close to the median?

2 close to the median one 10 pts below.
Not going to appeal - don't see the point. Weren't really expecting to get in.
Thinking more about next year and how to keep a bright (but not necessarily gifted) kid engaged in a regular mcps 4th grade class

PP, I hope it goes well with keeping DS engaged. We have a DS who is in 5th grade at an HGC, and are beginning to get a bit of a longer view. It has been wonderful in terms of the peer group, which for our DS was important because he wasn't fitting in socially before. But otherwise, the main "good" was in writing, and that was mostly in 5th grade. Fourth grade was not impressive. Math they take together with the rest of the school. (ie, not all HGC kids are in compacted math.)

And it is only 2 years. Your DS might still test into one of the middle school magnets (though I don't know if you or he will want that). Interestingly, it seems like less than 1/5 of our HGC class is going on to one of the magnet middle schools. Many of the kids going to Takoma Park middle etc will not be coming from an HGC. I think your child's scores do not necessarily mean he is not "gifted." Our DS didn't do well at all on the middle school magnet test, though he did quite well at the HGC. I think how an individual kid tests goes up and down as they grow, and there is a good bit of luck involved in how they test on any particular day.

But it sounds like you already know all this.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful words. It helps a lot

Where is your HGC? At our HGC, which is near MS magnets, about 2/3 usually attend one.

It's obvious. People there are high income earners with high academic backgrounds. Their kids have their resources and genes.

People in the other areas don't pay for prep classes.
