And yet it has more Nobel , academy award, Emmy award , pulitzer award , fields medal alumni.... More national championships ... A higher research budget and more impactful alumni than any ACC school.

Plus it integrated the ACC.

Face it, UMD isn't in the best conference, academically or athletically. UMD isn't in the best academic consortium. Standing by itself, UMD isn't one of the best universities. Nor is UMD one of the best state universities.

UMD is a good, fairly cheap school. But UMD isn't the pinnacle of university evolution.

Research budget isn't everything. The Big10 is mostly giant, Midwest land-grant RESEARCH SCHOOLS. Of course it's going to have the biggest research budgets. But the research budget says nothing about overall academics.

You can't compare the ACC to the consortiums or the Big10 to the consortiums. You can compare the Big10 to the ACC or the CIC to the other consortiums.

Looking at endowments, they're about equal. They both have average endowments of about 2.5 billion - though Maryland has the second lowest endowment in the Big10, so it's being helped up again.

The ACC has the higher mean US News ranking, a much higher median US News rating, and a fairly higher Academic Progress Rating, the NCAA's tool to evaluate academics.

I can't even watch entertainment TV anymore...Christsake..Dianne Weist has won more Oscare that the entire ACC alum put together don't get me started on that bastard Henson...he has more Emmys than the universe!!!! And I hate to break it to you but there are far better academic consortiums. The Claremont Consortium, 5 Colleges Consortium, and the Quaker Consortium, all have vastly superior average academics. The CIC's strength comes from Chicago and Hopkins, not from Maryland. Maryland drags them down.

Notre dame is not affiliated academically with the ACC .
