PP, my response is long. So excuse it or skip over it.

First of all, she didn't get SMACKED. She got MUSHED. There is a difference. Both are wrong -- but it is a difference. In this video, he was filming a behind the scenes documentary, and a girl backstage took his picture without permission. He takes her camera, and mushes her in the face, walks away. HORRIBLE. Agreed. Disrespectful, yes. A smack? No. Violent tendencies? ABSOLUTELY! Still present? Debatable.

Second, context matters. Do you know his history as a person or entertainer? Or are you a "new" fan, familiar only with his crossover pop music in recent years? I ask because the clip you are referencing, while horrifying to see, is not the same Jay-Z of today. If you look, he is rolling with MEMPHIS BLEEK in his crew. And Beanie Sigel. Do you know who they are? They are TROUBLE. Part of the reason that he is so popular with a very large fan base, is because of long standing fans that have followed him since The Dynasty album, where he was a VERY different person leaving from the Marcy Projects, that came up through rapping. He talks about how it literally saved his life. This is not a secret to anyone. So to see this kind of behavior, while sad is not a surprise.

Which brings me to my third point. I think that is the reason for no outrage is that he is not the same person anymore -- and anyone who knows his history, and followed ALL of his story, would reasonably make that assumption on one level or another. Do you think he would be welcomed into the political circles that he is welcomed into in the sports industry and others if he were still a gangster rapper on the streets mushing women?

No one is excusing the past behavior - but why run something through the wringer again? His history is not a secret. He has been on record for discussing and explaining behaviors that went hand-in-hand with that video, and it is in the past.He used to sell drugs, he once shot his brother - he raps about his life things bad, and things good - you can do your own research and look into his past, he doesn't hide it. He also has shared interviews with a bunch of others on his regrets, lessons learned, and the process of maturity as a near 40 year old man now. He talked about not having a father and how hard it was to learn to forgive him, how Beyonce helped him with that. M People can try, but no matter how many assumptions, snippets, and feelings, we only ever know parts of information about anyone - celebrity or not. Not with Solange, not with Jay-Z, not with Beyonce, not with a stranger on the corner that doesn't think you need to stop for a funeral procession.

You asked, where is the outrage of this video. I think you missed it when it happened, 16 years ago, when he was a young foolish idiot known for a certain party style, gangster mentality, and other reprehensible qualities that he (at least on the surface) no longer demonstrates. Clearly he has since learned to better handle the bold assertiveness of fans and the paparazzi. And crazy siblings.

Last, I will reiterate that I am not excusing the behavior. I am trying to offer context. This is OLD. And when people change, there is a time stamp on it. There are many, many examples of bad boy gone good, or vice versa, in the entertainment industry. To suggest that he should still be persecuted for his behaviors in his youth is petty in light of what happened. If nothing else, the fact that he didn't hit Solange back or show any anger while being viciously attacked shows more maturity than some people would even show today without his history.

This was clearly an unhinged person exhibiting an episode of violence; the others were calm because 1) they know her mental health history and 2) the bodyguard was there to handle it.

A source (not 50 Cent) tells the New York Daily News that Solange Knowles' infamous elevator attack on brother-in-law Jay Z happened after Jay decided to ditch the Met Ball for Rihanna's after-party without bringing Beyoncé.

The tension between the two started earlier in the night, when a group of Solange's "non-famous" friends reportedly crashed the gala and started dropping Jay Z's name.

"They were pretending they were guests of his and not hers. Management went to Julius (Beyonce's bodyguard) and said there's a problem," the source said.

Shortly afterward, Jay Z apparently confronted Solange and told her "don't use my name."

At that point, Solange decided she wanted to leave, the source said, and Jay Z decided to take off for Rihanna's party on his own, calling ahead to say he wouldn't need extra security.

Solange reportedly lost it. Here's the source's account of the conversation that took place in the elevator video:

"She said, 'Why can't you go home?' and to Beyonce 'Why does your husband need to go to the club right now?'"

"You're one to talk," Jay replied.

That's when the punching, kicking, and purse-swinging started.

LOS ANGELES – Tensions between Solange Knowles, her sister Beyonce, and her sister’s husband Jay Z are nothing new.

According to sources close to the family, the surveillance video of Solange allegedly going after Jay Z in a New York City elevator comes as “no great surprise,” as tempers among the three have flared numerous times over the years, mainly over minor disagreements.

We’re told Jay Z is fiercely protective of his wife, which may have contributed to Knowles’ apparent outburst, which is said to have been sparked by a simple misunderstanding.

An insider told FOX411 that Solange also got mad after another misunderstanding involving Jay-Z and Beyonce years ago, when she insisted before a local TV interview that no Beyonce questions be asked. The source said Solange then “flipped out” after seeing a tease piece on the station about Jay Z, before being assured by producers that her interview was not live, and the piece was not related to her segment.

Solange has also dropped little digs in the press here and there over the years.

“It would be so much easier for me to put on a little black dress, straighten my hair, and sing about dancing in the club, but it’s not my job to prove anything,” Solange said during a 2010 interview with fashion site Refinery29. “I’m here to make music, to inspire myself. I’m not selling my likeability, I’m sharing my journeys. If you don’t like it, believe it’s real, or understand it… then keep my name out of your mouth.”

In 2012, the R&B singer also told the New York Times that she would not record with her A-list sister.

A couple of days before the alleged elevator incident, Beyonce posted a message on Instagram: “Lord, l lift up every one of my relationships to you and ask You to bless them… Help me to choose friends wisely so I won’t be led astray… Give me discernment and strength to separate myself from anyone who is not a good influence. I release my relationships to you and pray that your will be done with each and every one of them.”

RadarOnline.com reports that Solange has since deleted all pictures on Instagram of her with her famous sibling, with the exception of one vintage photograph posted last year.

However, family relations aren't always strained. Just a few weeks before the alleged kerfuffle, the Knowles sisters and Jay Z attended California’s Coachella Music Festival together, and Beyonce even brought her sister to the stage for a surprise dance show.

Reps for Beyonce, Solange and Jay Z did not return our requests for comment.

Image is everything with Jay and Bey, the elevator camera was running so you would expect that they keep deadpan responses. We've never heard of Solange having a drinking problem, etc. And, I for one love her natural hairdos and "otherness." We have no idea what set her off. As if Jay-Z is a gentleman.
