X number of days as in 10 which is a DCPS law? Or you guys have created your own number which probably can't hold up?

Part of the anger, I bet is from OOB, but still in DC parents. I teach at at Cap Hill ES and we have been (as a school) using attendance as a way to remove OOB kiddos. That is, if your kids miss X number of school days- they get the boot.
So while its great that your kids can walk- some cannot. And they will face a very real consequence at the end of the year.

I really don't understand the anger here. If you think it's dangerous, don't send your child to school. I'm sure the teachers aren't going to teach the most important lesson of the year today, nor will they give a mandatory pop quiz. They will run drills to pass the time.

Just pretend it is a snow day and stay home. The rest of us that live within walking distance of our schools, or have a driveable route to take, will send our kids. Done.

agreed...harks back to the days when Michelle Rhee announced schools opening the Tuesday after a blizzard when sidewalks were impassable. I guess the streets around the mayor and chancellor were treated.... It would be less worrisome if there were school buses for the middle and high school kids.
