Hmmm, not sure what this says about me. I'm growing swiss chard in my front yard this year right in front of my boxwoods. I love having ornamental kale and cabbage in the front yard in the fall so I'd thought I'd try it in the spring/summer. I'm using it as an ornamental more than something to eat although we will probably harvest some of it.

I really truly don't understand. Do you believe vegetables are ugly? Veggie plants are gorgeous, and a well-tended veggie garden is an extremely pretty piece of landscaping.

I agree. And corn is a grass, so it is not all that different from the giant invasive ornamental grasses so many folks are in love with - - except it is not invasive and it produces food. I've worked ornamental popcorn in among the front perennial flower beds -- totally natural looking. The red varieties produce really nice red tassels. Neighbors didn't know until I told them it was corn - popcorn actually. And the kids love putting the whole dried cob in the microwave and watching the corn pop off of it. With this method I had to hand pollinate, but it was not big deal with so few plants. I also love the corn fence idea! Great idea for a school garden.

Corn is wind pollenated, so you need a few rows to produce anything.

My tenants ripped up our shrubs and plants and flowers in the backyard and planted a garden and corn and layed hay.

Not tacky at all. There are a couple of houses in Cleveland Park where they grow corn out front. I think it's great.
