I didn't suffer as a child but after I married things were tough. I do pack my pantry. Everyone that sees it asks if I'm a prepper.

Well, we're not wealthy but we have enough money. Still, DW and I check out the thrift shops such as Value Village once in a while. She's an executive and has found some nice jackets for work for $7.

9:06 - How you felt about food I am with clothes. When I got clothing bought from a store that was not from my sister, or the second hand shop I was over the moon! Every winter coat came from either Think New or Next to New, stores that used to be in Bethesda back in the day. But all of us girls can tell quality from that experience.

We had to tie the dog to the roof of car when we went on vacations, but that's not because we were poor.

sadly, in some parts of the US, people joined the Army to get food.

Yes!

I know. Sort of like a Depression era mentality but we were living in the 1970s not the 1930s! Still feel access to good food in the schools (at least breakfast and lunch) is so important.

PP, I had a very similar experience. The dorms were like heaven--tons of food, and you could have as much as you wanted!

I ate my meals at school. I held 3 jobs..movie theater, dairy queen, and lifeguard in summer. Sometimes there just wasn't enough food in the apartment for breakfast, so I just bought it at school. Thankfully, the school had started serving breakfast foods in the AM. I also bought my own lunches at school. Not enough to eat in my house back then. I was in heaven with dorm food at college - I actually thought it was quite good. And there was plenty of it.

I am a freak now and STOCK the FRIDGE full to the point where food is falling out. I hated not having enough food in the house.

I was in high school in the 1970s. I cannot remember the fast food chain we went to, but it was when those places started having salad bars. Maybe Hardees (It was in Indiana). We had very little money. We paid for one all you can eat salad and passed the bowl to each other after one of us was done eating. So embarrassing and disgusting!
