With a higher profile, comes more money. Academics will ultimately benefit.


Where, exactly, will that money come from? Alums? Maybe. Current parents? The proportion of full paying families is declining. The new Bullis Head of School has said that any applicant with a 3.0 record doesn't have to take the SSAT. Sounds okay if you don't know that failing schools hand out As for attendance. Bullis may be proceeding on the Good Counsel model, but I haven't heard anyone say that the academics is improving, and have heard that resources are being diverted to remedial type education for the star athletes.

Yes, something was missing -- playing time at Landon. Bullis took a senior transfer lacrosse player last year -- none of the reputable schools take ANY seniors as new students, let alone an athletic recruit. What you call "gone renegade" I see as a clever, if risky, plan to move Bullis out of independent school obscurity and into the realm of the "Big 3." All I know is that when I first started reading this forum, I had never even heard of Bullis. Now, it's mentioned in the same sentence as Landon. Yes, not necesssarily in a favorable light. But I suspect that over time the adage, all press is good press will prove true.


You are really on to something. I think Gerald Boarman is doing exactly what he did at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and at Eleanor Roosevelt before that. He may look like a used car salesman but he's shaking things up and he's really done a lot for kids who don't usually get all the breaks as well as kids born into privilege. It will be interesting to see what Bullis becomes over the next 5 years.


There are rumblings that all is not well financially, however. Bullis is "filling the seats" by giving financial aid (frequently to athletes). This may be a gamble thT parents/alums will enjoy the sports success and step up the pace of giving.

If you think letting in all these "top athletes" is going to get Bullis to compare to the Big 3, good luck. It is academics, not athletics that defines the Big 3. If anything it seems that Bullis is trying to become a Gonzaga or Good Counsel. Sports first, academics second.

I've heard the IAC is considering rules about inter-conference transfers In large part because Bullis is recruiting athletes from Landon.
