I can honestly say that insertion was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I took the drugs before hand and the pain was still unimaginable. After the first week, I had no problems with it until two years later when I began having awful cramps and became really sick. I had it removed and had a new inserted and still experienced the same amount of pain, if not more.

Mine was painless!

I found the insertion to be quite painful and I had very painful cramps for 20 minutes after insertion. I never gave birth to a child before and I'm told its more painful for people who haven't given birth. Worth the pain though. No complications afterwards!

Since when does Georgetown do iuds? I was told they can only do the pill.

Before i had it done i stopped reading the reviews here past page 3 since I'd already made my decision and didn't want to make myself crazy. I had it done at the end of my period. I took 2 ibuprofen an hour before but should've taken more. I have no trouble with annual exams. The mirena insertion was the most painful sensation I've ever felt, 10/10 pain. I used focused breathing to stay relaxed but the pain during this procedure quickly moved from a strong menstrual cramp to a deeper place in the core ive never felt outside of this procedure (except maybe labor). The pain also radiated out to 1 side. It was so intense i lost my breathing and the nurse reminded me not to hold my breath. Then it was over and the pain very quickly subsided over the next 20 minutes to just feeling a little tender , 1/10, and I went on with my day with no problems.

My insertion was at Georgetown with a very experienced dr. He assured me the eventual removal wouldn't be painful.

I'm not sure prior posters have emphasized that although it is excruciating for some patients, the procedure is quick. it feels like forever but is probably 1 minute, while the benefits of mirena last 5 years.

I took misoprostol the night before and the morning of. Lets just say that did not help at all! I had a resident do most of the work with the help of a seasoned gynaecologist. The spectrum and the cleaning were fine, but then it came time to measure the depth of my uterus. The resident tried a couple times and then the gynaecologist took over and even she had trouble. I then had my cervix clamped in order to make this process easier. It hurt so badly I almost leapt right off the table and the rest of the procedure was so painful I couldn't hold back some tears and my toes and fists were clenched the entire time. It took another 5-10 minutes or so to get the depth measured and as it further and further up it felt like consecutive jabbing pains to my insides. Honestly, the actually placing of the IUD hurt less than them measuring the depth. As soon as they took the clamp off I was immediately in less pain, but when I first sat I I felt extremely faint and for the next hour and a half or so I thought I was going to throw up. It's been 2 hours since the procedure now and I am feeling a bit better with some mild cramping. I am hoping I won't experience cramps as bad as some have mentioned. I have also never had a child so I understand that in itself can make the procedure more painful. Apparently, the girl before me threw up it was so bad. I am glad I wasn't told that before the procedure! I am hoping it will be worth the 5 years of birth control, but I can honestly say as of today, I don't think I would have it done again. Maybe after I have had a child, but definitely not before. Some woman have felt no pain and I believe them, but for the woman who have felt excruciating pain, don't underestimate what they are telling you. When a woman says it's the most painful thing she has ever experienced it really is and I can attest to that.

Most painful thing outside of childbirth. Guess I have asharp curve up top. Np couldn't get to cervix after a few tries had to get ny gyno to do it. She did it first try but still hurt! Cried and yelled out once. Was very embarrassed but couldn't help it. Then cramps, but at least it's over.

thats crazy I felt the same thing and I also have two kids but after he put it and I didn't feel more pain, any cramps nothing.

Well, mine were painless. I also did not experience any pain during a uterine biopsy. Everyone is different, I suppose.

Most painful experience of my life...nausea, dizziness, and stabbing pain in my left side...insertion itself was a sheet grabbing experience, but after insertion was over, mild cramping on right side and sharp unending pain on left. Had it removed after 20 mins of not being able to even sit up...very unusual response, but never again!

i am 24 and have never been pregnant, i didnt think it was bad at all. it hurt like an intense pressure/cramp for about a minute while she did it, then i had mild cramps for an hour or two, then nothing. they put it in while i was on my period, and gave me some cervix dilating pill to take 6 hours before, and i think she put numbing cream in there first. a tiny bit worse than a pap smear but WAY WAY less painful than the brazilian wax i had a few days ago!

It's not very painful if you have already had a child. If you have not, it stretches the cervix as if you are going into labor and is very painful!

I'm 19, worst pain of my life. I didn't do any research about pain before hand bc I knew I'd chicken out if I did. I puked and thought I was going to pass out for hours. I even had to lay in the doc office for 30 min after bc i couldn't get up-painful as fuck. If I would have known it would hurt so bad and I'd have the worst cramps for hours after, I would not have done it. Being on the pill is worth it to me. Hopefully it's worth it. I'm scared to get it taken out ;/
Plus it didn't help that my doc and nurse laughed at me and called me a "diva" afterwards.... So unprofessional *

I'm a young woman who has never had children, and the first time I had it inserted was very painful but worthwhile. I had 2 Advil before the appointment to dull the pain. This time, 5 years later, I went with my fiance to have my old one removed and a new one put in.

Still worth it, but it hurt more than anything I've ever experienced. And that was with misoprostil (a cervix softening agent your doc can prescribe. It's possible that since I stopped getting my period after about a year on mirena (Wahoo!) the timng of the appointment was ppor and my cervix was more closed than the last appointment. Either way, I'd go in prepared for the possibility of it hurting a whole lot.

The practitioner was a seasoned female gynaecologist, just so you know And cramping/bleeding wasn't too terrible afterwards, just a week or so of the bleeding a couple days of regular period cramping.
