The recent website photos make it seem a bit more ethnically and economically diverse.

Start a new thread. People don’t want to wade through info that is 7+ years old.

If you have a kid who is not country club rich or athletic, he or she will be an outcast in this school. There are other great parish schools you could look at that would be more accepting.

The question is if mercy still is a good "academically speaking" school.

Because of the neighborhood it is in and the community it serves, the academics are consistent with what these people expect.

But no one I know or ever heard of sought out Our Lady of Mercy for academic excellence. They go there because its their Parish school.

Their record at getting their students into the high schools these people want their kids to get into (Prep, Gonzaga, Stone Ridge and Visitation) is good. But it's no better than other local Catholic schools like De Chantal or St. Barts.

The people in the parish have a very strong influence over the school. Thinking of it as just some standalone entity standing next to a Church and finding it attractive because of its location seems to me to be a recipe for disappointment.

Everyone we know who sent their kids to Mercy were members of the parish, lived with the parish boundaries and were practicing Catholics. We did know a few people that were Catholics from outside the parish boundaries (i.e. Rockville, Gaithersburg, etc.) that sent their children there because they thought Mercy was a little better academically.

The parish is sometimes playfully called "Our Lady of Mercedes", a joke none of the parishioners seem to find funny.

More than a few boys move from Mercy to Mater Dei because it's all-boys and more athletically-focused.

You are not a member of the Parish?

If not, let me suggest you do a lot more research into who sends their kids to Mercy and why.

I love these types of posts.

(1) Sample size of two students?

(2) Nice humblebrag.

You have obviously been hurt and see Mercy as the cause. I'm sorry this happened to you, but there are hundreds of families who love this school and church. I have one child at Mercy and it has been a great experience. Yes, there was some drama last year, but that has past. The teachers that left were replaced with outstanding new teachers. This school prepares your kids not only academically, but socially teaching kindness.

PP, the word is "passed." But I guess by Mercy's standards, your grammar is just fine.

I guess PP has not spent much time on the Independent School forum of DCUM.
