I know! We picked DS' name out of a book, and thought we were SO original and clever - only to find out it's rising like wildfire on the SS list, and at my first pp checkup my OB said "oh, I know 4 X's born in the past month"! How on earth did that happen? I've never met or heard of a single person with his name before. (At least it's not on the top 10 list, but I bet it will be in a couple years.) And, no, you can't know what it is b/c I don't want you to use it!

I agree, Lucy doesn't seem to be common. I only know of one - 6 yrs in my DCs school.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Ben or Benjamin. My son is usually one of several - it started in daycare and continues in ES.

I definitely grew up with one of those 5-kids-in-my-class had my name names. I also had a generic last name and married into an only slightly less generic one. Ironically my favorite boy's name, Evan, is a close relative's name and so I can't use it. Both the boy and girl names we like (besides Evan) have been mentioned here but I don't know any kids with those names, weirdly.

Agree with the fact that I don't like the names of my mother's friends: Gloria, Janet, Barbara, etc.

I have an Evelyn and noticed that it's becoming really popular. I actually had another mom get mad at me because I had the audacity to give my child the same name. It didn't matter that my Evelyn was 2 or 3 years older than hers.

I too have an Evelyn. Since her, I have only met 2 others, one 3 years younger and the other 2 years older! So far she has been the only Evelyn in her peer group. Nice name that is common enough not to mispronounce, but not too too popular so there isn't an over abundance, well at least not yet.

Violet - 1 4-year-old
Matilda - 1 6-year-old
Delilah - 2, 3yo & 14 yo

August - 2, both 3yo
Milo - 1, 4yo
Emmett - encountered on the playground, maybe 2yo
Jasper - 2, 3yo & 1yo

With the exception of Emmett, I know all these children personally. Violet, Matilda, and August are my nieces and nephew.

To 16:37, my DS's name is on your list. In fact, I think it was mentioned as one of the most common names in Bethesda in a different thread, although I don't live in Bethesda so I wouldn't know.

I think something to keep in mind is the last name. If the last name is 'Smith' then of course you'd want to pick something a bit more original/unique. I wouldn't fault someone for picking something more 'out there' with a common last name...or something more plain if the last name were difficult or exotic.

What's amazing to me is how so many of these sound alike, like Ava/Eva and Ella/Stella/Isabella or Addison/Madison.

I counted 34+ names for girls and 31 names for boy on the list above. When I was a kid it seemed most of us had one of 5 names. I think we're kind of overreacting here about the popularity issue. It seems there are plenty of names to go around for our children these days.

I think Anne and Mary are names that will always be considered classic, but I most of these still sound very dated to me, especially Carol, Barbara, Suzanne, Janet and Deborah.

Also Sandra, Sharon, Marilyn, Gail and Brenda.

Penelope is definitely on its way back.
